Psalms 56
- 1<pb/><e>For the director of music. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” Of David. A miktam.</e><f>[99]</f> When the Philistines had seized him in Gath. <pb/><t>Be merciful to me, my God,</t> <t>for my enemies are in hot pursuit;</t> <t>all day long they press their attack.</t>
- 2<t>My adversaries pursue me all day long;</t> <t>in their pride many are attacking me. <pb/></t>
- 3<t>When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.</t>
- 4<t>In God, whose word I praise—</t> <t>in God I trust and am not afraid.</t> <t>What can mere mortals do to me? <pb/></t>
- 5<t>All day long they twist my words;</t> <t>all their schemes are for my ruin.</t>
- 6<t>They conspire, they lurk,</t> <t>they watch my steps,</t> <t>hoping to take my life.</t>
- 7<t>Because of their wickedness do not<f>[100]</f> let them escape;</t> <t>in your anger, God, bring the nations down. <pb/></t>
- 8<t>Record my misery;</t> <t>list my tears on your scroll<f>[101]</f>—</t> <t>are they not in your record?</t>
- 9<t>Then my enemies will turn back</t> <t>when I call for help.</t> <t>By this I will know that God is for me. <pb/></t>

- 11<t>in God I trust and am not afraid.</t> <t>What can man do to me? <pb/></t>
- 12<t>I am under vows to you, my God;</t> <t>I will present my thank offerings to you.</t>
- 13<t>For you have delivered me from death</t> <t>and my feet from stumbling,</t> <t>that I may walk before God</t> <t>in the light of life.</t>
