Psalms 55

  1. 1<pb/><e>For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil</e><f>[97]</f> of David. <pb/><t>Listen to my prayer, O God,</t> <t>do not ignore my plea;</t>
  2. 2<t>hear me and answer me.</t> <t>My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught</t>
  3. 3<t>because of what my enemy is saying,</t> <t>because of the threats of the wicked;</t> <t>for they bring down suffering on me</t> <t>and assail me in their anger. <pb/></t>
  4. 4<t>My heart is in anguish within me;</t> <t>the terrors of death have fallen on me.</t>
  5. 5<t>Fear and trembling have beset me;</t> <t>horror has overwhelmed me.</t>
  6. 6<t>I said, “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove!</t> <t>I would fly away and be at rest.</t>
  7. 7<t>I would flee far away</t> <t>and stay in the desert;<f>[98]</f></t>
  8. 8<t>I would hurry to my place of shelter,</t> <t>far from the tempest and storm.” <pb/></t>
  9. 9<t>Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words,</t> <t>for I see violence and strife in the city.</t>
  10. 10<t>Day and night they prowl about on its walls;</t> <t>malice and abuse are within it.</t>
  11. 11<t>Destructive forces are at work in the city;</t> <t>threats and lies never leave its streets. <pb/></t>
  12. 12<t>If an enemy were insulting me,</t> <t>I could endure it;</t> <t>if a foe were rising against me,</t> <t>I could hide.</t>
  13. 13<t>But it is you, a man like myself,</t> <t>my companion, my close friend,</t>
  14. 14<t>with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship</t> <t>at the house of God,</t> <t>as we walked about</t> <t>among the worshipers. <pb/></t>
  15. 15<t>Let death take my enemies by surprise;</t> <t>let them go down alive to the realm of the dead,</t> <t>for evil finds lodging among them. <pb/></t>
  16. 16<t>As for me, I call to God,</t> <t>and the LORD saves me.</t>
  17. 17<t>Evening, morning and noon</t> <t>I cry out in distress,</t> <t>and he hears my voice.</t>
  18. 18<t>He rescues me unharmed</t> <t>from the battle waged against me,</t> <t>even though many oppose me.</t>
  19. 19<t>God, who is enthroned from of old,</t> <t>who does not change—</t> <t>he will hear them and humble them,</t> <t>because they have no fear of God. <pb/></t>
  20. 20<t>My companion attacks his friends;</t> <t>he violates his covenant.</t>
  21. 21<t>His talk is smooth as butter,</t> <t>yet war is in his heart;</t> <t>his words are more soothing than oil,</t> <t>yet they are drawn swords. <pb/></t>
  22. 22<t>Cast your cares on the LORD</t> <t>and he will sustain you;</t> <t>he will never let</t> <t>the righteous be shaken.</t>
  23. 23<t>But you, God, will bring down the wicked</t> <t>into the pit of decay;</t> <t>the bloodthirsty and deceitful</t> <t>will not live out half their days. <pb/>But as for me, I trust in you.</t>
