Psalms 51

  1. 1<pb/><e>For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.</e> <pb/><t>Have mercy on me, O God,</t> <t>according to your unfailing love;</t> <t>according to your great compassion</t> <t>blot out my transgressions.</t>
  2. 2<t>Wash away all my iniquity</t> <t>and cleanse me from my sin. <pb/></t>
  3. 3<t>For I know my transgressions,</t> <t>and my sin is always before me.</t>
  4. 4<t>Against you, you only, have I sinned</t> <t>and done what is evil in your sight;</t> <t>so you are right in your verdict</t> <t>and justified when you judge.</t>
  5. 5<t>Surely I was sinful at birth,</t> <t>sinful from the time my mother conceived me.</t>
  6. 6<t>Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;</t> <t>you taught me wisdom in that secret place. <pb/></t>
  7. 7<t>Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;</t> <t>wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.</t>
  8. 8<t>Let me hear joy and gladness;</t> <t>let the bones you have crushed rejoice.</t>
  9. 9<t>Hide your face from my sins</t> <t>and blot out all my iniquity. <pb/></t>
  10. 10<t>Create in me a pure heart, O God,</t> <t>and renew a steadfast spirit within me.</t>
  11. 11<t>Do not cast me from your presence</t> <t>or take your Holy Spirit from me.</t>
  12. 12<t>Restore to me the joy of your salvation</t> <t>and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. <pb/></t>
  13. 13<t>Then I will teach transgressors your ways,</t> <t>so that sinners will turn back to you.</t>
  14. 14<t>Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,</t> <t>you who are God my Savior,</t> <t>and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.</t>
  15. 15<t>Open my lips, Lord,</t> <t>and my mouth will declare your praise.</t>
  16. 16<t>You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;</t> <t>you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.</t>
  17. 17<t>My sacrifice, O God, is<f>[90]</f> a broken spirit;</t> <t>a broken and contrite heart</t> <t>you, God, will not despise. <pb/></t>
  18. 18<t>May it please you to prosper Zion,</t> <t>to build up the walls of Jerusalem.</t>
  19. 19<t>Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,</t> <t>in burnt offerings offered whole;</t> <t>then bulls will be offered on your altar.</t>
