Psalms 44

  1. 1<pb/><e>For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil.</e><f>[70]</f> <pb/><t>We have heard it with our ears, O God;</t> <t>our ancestors have told us</t> <t>what you did in their days,</t> <t>in days long ago.</t>
  2. 2<t>With your hand you drove out the nations</t> <t>and planted our ancestors;</t> <t>you crushed the peoples</t> <t>and made our ancestors flourish.</t>
  3. 3<t>It was not by their sword that they won the land,</t> <t>nor did their arm bring them victory;</t> <t>it was your right hand, your arm,</t> <t>and the light of your face, for you loved them. <pb/></t>
  4. 4<t>You are my King and my God,</t> <t>who decrees<f>[71]</f> victories for Jacob.</t>
  5. 5<t>Through you we push back our enemies;</t> <t>through your name we trample our foes.</t>
  6. 6<t>I put no trust in my bow,</t> <t>my sword does not bring me victory;</t>
  7. 7<t>but you give us victory over our enemies,</t> <t>you put our adversaries to shame.</t>
  8. 8<t>In God we make our boast all day long,</t> <t>and we will praise your name forever.<f>[72]</f> <pb/></t>
  9. 9<t>But now you have rejected and humbled us;</t> <t>you no longer go out with our armies.</t>
  10. 10<t>You made us retreat before the enemy,</t> <t>and our adversaries have plundered us.</t>
  11. 11<t>You gave us up to be devoured like sheep</t> <t>and have scattered us among the nations.</t>
  12. 12<t>You sold your people for a pittance,</t> <t>gaining nothing from their sale. <pb/></t>
  13. 13<t>You have made us a reproach to our neighbors,</t> <t>the scorn and derision of those around us.</t>
  14. 14<t>You have made us a byword among the nations;</t> <t>the peoples shake their heads at us.</t>
  15. 15<t>I live in disgrace all day long,</t> <t>and my face is covered with shame</t>
  16. 16<t>at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me,</t> <t>because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge. <pb/></t>
  17. 17<t>All this came upon us,</t> <t>though we had not forgotten you;</t> <t>we had not been false to your covenant.</t>
  18. 18<t>Our hearts had not turned back;</t> <t>our feet had not strayed from your path.</t>
  19. 19<t>But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals;</t> <t>you covered us over with deep darkness. <pb/></t>
  20. 20<t>If we had forgotten the name of our God</t> <t>or spread out our hands to a foreign god,</t>
  21. 21<t>would not God have discovered it,</t> <t>since he knows the secrets of the heart?</t>
  22. 22<t>Yet for your sake we face death all day long;</t> <t>we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. <pb/></t>
  23. 23<t>Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep?</t> <t>Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.</t>
  24. 24<t>Why do you hide your face</t> <t>and forget our misery and oppression? <pb/></t>
  25. 25<t>We are brought down to the dust;</t> <t>our bodies cling to the ground.</t>
  26. 26<t>Rise up and help us;</t> <t>rescue us because of your unfailing love.</t>
