Psalms 40

  1. 1<pb/><e>For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.</e> <pb/><t>I waited patiently for the LORD;</t> <t>he turned to me and heard my cry.</t>
  2. 2<t>He lifted me out of the slimy pit,</t> <t>out of the mud and mire;</t> <t>he set my feet on a rock</t> <t>and gave me a firm place to stand.</t>
  3. 3<t>He put a new song in my mouth,</t> <t>a hymn of praise to our God.</t> <t>Many will see and fear the LORD</t> <t>and put their trust in him. <pb/></t>
  4. 4<t>Blessed is the one</t> <t>who trusts in the LORD,</t> <t>who does not look to the proud,</t> <t>to those who turn aside to false gods.<f>[63]</f></t>
  5. 5<t>Many, LORD my God,</t> <t>are the wonders you have done,</t> <t>the things you planned for us.</t> <t>None can compare with you;</t> <t>were I to speak and tell of your deeds,</t> <t>they would be too many to declare. <pb/></t>
  6. 6<t>Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—</t> <t>but my ears you have opened<f>[64]</f>—</t> <t>burnt offerings and sin offerings<f>[65]</f> you did not require.</t>
  7. 7<t>Then I said, “Here I am, I have come—</t> <t>it is written about me in the scroll.<f>[66]</f></t>
  8. 8<t>I desire to do your will, my God;</t> <t>your law is within my heart.” <pb/></t>
  9. 9<t>I proclaim your saving acts in the great assembly;</t> <t>I do not seal my lips, LORD,</t> <t>as you know.</t>
  10. 10<t>I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;</t> <t>I speak of your faithfulness and your saving help.</t> <t>I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness</t> <t>from the great assembly. <pb/></t>
  11. 11<t>Do not withhold your mercy from me, LORD;</t> <t>may your love and faithfulness always protect me.</t>
  12. 12<t>For troubles without number surround me;</t> <t>my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.</t> <t>They are more than the hairs of my head,</t> <t>and my heart fails within me.</t>
  13. 13<t>Be pleased to save me, LORD;</t> <t>come quickly, LORD, to help me. <pb/></t>
  14. 14<t>May all who want to take my life</t> <t>be put to shame and confusion;</t> <t>may all who desire my ruin</t> <t>be turned back in disgrace.</t>
  15. 15<t>May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”</t> <t>be appalled at their own shame.</t>
  16. 16<t>But may all who seek you</t> <t>rejoice and be glad in you;</t> <t>may those who long for your saving help always say,</t> <t>“The LORD is great!” <pb/></t>
  17. 17<t>But as for me, I am poor and needy;</t> <t>may the Lord think of me.</t> <t>You are my help and my deliverer;</t> <t>you are my God, do not delay.</t>
