Psalms 39
- 1<pb/><e>For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.</e> <pb/><t>I said, “I will watch my ways</t> <t>and keep my tongue from sin;</t> <t>I will put a muzzle on my mouth</t> <t>while in the presence of the wicked.”</t>
- 2<t>So I remained utterly silent,</t> <t>not even saying anything good.</t> <t>But my anguish increased;</t>
- 3<t>my heart grew hot within me.</t> <t>While I meditated, the fire burned;</t> <t>then I spoke with my tongue: <pb/></t>
- 4<t>“Show me, LORD, my life’s end</t> <t>and the number of my days;</t> <t>let me know how fleeting my life is.</t>
- 5<t>You have made my days a mere handbreadth;</t> <t>the span of my years is as nothing before you.</t> <t>Everyone is but a breath,</t> <t>even those who seem secure.<f>[62]</f> <pb/></t>
- 6<t>“Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom;</t> <t>in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth</t> <t>without knowing whose it will finally be. <pb/></t>
- 7<t>“But now, Lord, what do I look for?</t> <t>My hope is in you.</t>
- 8<t>Save me from all my transgressions;</t> <t>do not make me the scorn of fools.</t>
- 9<t>I was silent; I would not open my mouth,</t> <t>for you are the one who has done this.</t>
- 10<t>Remove your scourge from me;</t> <t>I am overcome by the blow of your hand.</t>
- 11<t>When you rebuke and discipline anyone for their sin,</t> <t>you consume their wealth like a moth—</t> <t>surely everyone is but a breath. <pb/></t>
- 12<t>“Hear my prayer, LORD,</t> <t>listen to my cry for help;</t> <t>do not be deaf to my weeping.</t> <t>I dwell with you as a foreigner,</t> <t>a stranger, as all my ancestors were.</t>
- 13<t>Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again</t> <t>before I depart and am no more.”</t>
