Psalms 38

  1. 1<pb/><e>A psalm of David. A petition.</e> <pb/><t>LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger</t> <t>or discipline me in your wrath.</t>
  2. 2<t>Your arrows have pierced me,</t> <t>and your hand has come down on me.</t>
  3. 3<t>Because of your wrath there is no health in my body;</t> <t>there is no soundness in my bones because of my sin.</t>
  4. 4<t>My guilt has overwhelmed me</t> <t>like a burden too heavy to bear. <pb/></t>
  5. 5<t>My wounds fester and are loathsome</t> <t>because of my sinful folly.</t>
  6. 6<t>I am bowed down and brought very low;</t> <t>all day long I go about mourning.</t>
  7. 7<t>My back is filled with searing pain;</t> <t>there is no health in my body.</t>
  8. 8<t>I am feeble and utterly crushed;</t> <t>I groan in anguish of heart. <pb/></t>
  9. 9<t>All my longings lie open before you, Lord;</t> <t>my sighing is not hidden from you.</t>
  10. 10<t>My heart pounds, my strength fails me;</t> <t>even the light has gone from my eyes.</t>
  11. 11<t>My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds;</t> <t>my neighbors stay far away.</t>
  12. 12<t>Those who want to kill me set their traps,</t> <t>those who would harm me talk of my ruin;</t> <t>all day long they scheme and lie. <pb/></t>
  13. 13<t>I am like the deaf, who cannot hear,</t> <t>like the mute, who cannot speak;</t>
  14. 14<t>I have become like one who does not hear,</t> <t>whose mouth can offer no reply.</t>
  15. 15<t>LORD, I wait for you;</t> <t>you will answer, Lord my God.</t>
  16. 16<t>For I said, “Do not let them gloat</t> <t>or exalt themselves over me when my feet slip.” <pb/></t>
  17. 17<t>For I am about to fall,</t> <t>and my pain is ever with me.</t>
  18. 18<t>I confess my iniquity;</t> <t>I am troubled by my sin.</t>
  19. 19<t>Many have become my enemies without cause<f>[61]</f>;</t> <t>those who hate me without reason are numerous.</t>
  20. 20<t>Those who repay my good with evil</t> <t>lodge accusations against me,</t> <t>though I seek only to do what is good. <pb/></t>
  21. 21<t>LORD, do not forsake me;</t> <t>do not be far from me, my God.</t>
  22. 22<t>Come quickly to help me,</t> <t>my Lord and my Savior.</t>
