Psalms 140
- 1<pb/><e>For the director of music. A psalm of David.</e> <pb/><t>Rescue me, LORD, from evildoers;</t> <t>protect me from the violent,</t>
- 2<t>who devise evil plans in their hearts</t> <t>and stir up war every day.</t>
- 3<t>They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent’s;</t> <t>the poison of vipers is on their lips.<f>[221]</f> <pb/></t>
- 4<t>Keep me safe, LORD, from the hands of the wicked;</t> <t>protect me from the violent,</t> <t>who devise ways to trip my feet.</t>
- 5<t>The arrogant have hidden a snare for me;</t> <t>they have spread out the cords of their net</t> <t>and have set traps for me along my path. <pb/></t>
- 6<t>I say to the LORD, “You are my God.”</t> <t>Hear, LORD, my cry for mercy.</t>
- 7<t>Sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer,</t> <t>you shield my head in the day of battle.</t>
- 8<t>Do not grant the wicked their desires, LORD;</t> <t>do not let their plans succeed. <pb/></t>
- 9<t>Those who surround me proudly rear their heads;</t> <t>may the mischief of their lips engulf them.</t>
- 10<t>May burning coals fall on them;</t> <t>may they be thrown into the fire,</t> <t>into miry pits, never to rise.</t>
- 11<t>May slanderers not be established in the land;</t> <t>may disaster hunt down the violent. <pb/></t>
- 12<t>I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor</t> <t>and upholds the cause of the needy.</t>
- 13<t>Surely the righteous will praise your name,</t> <t>and the upright will live in your presence.</t>
