Psalms 106
- 1<pb/><t>Praise the LORD.<f>[189]</f> <pb/>Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;</t> <t>his love endures forever. <pb/></t>
- 2<t>Who can proclaim the mighty acts of the LORD</t> <t>or fully declare his praise?</t>
- 3<t>Blessed are those who act justly,</t> <t>who always do what is right. <pb/></t>
- 4<t>Remember me, LORD, when you show favor to your people,</t> <t>come to my aid when you save them,</t>
- 5<t>that I may enjoy the prosperity of your chosen ones,</t> <t>that I may share in the joy of your nation</t> <t>and join your inheritance in giving praise. <pb/></t>
- 6<t>We have sinned, even as our ancestors did;</t> <t>we have done wrong and acted wickedly.</t>
- 7<t>When our ancestors were in Egypt,</t> <t>they gave no thought to your miracles;</t> <t>they did not remember your many kindnesses,</t> <t>and they rebelled by the sea, the Red Sea.<f>[190]</f></t>
- 8<t>Yet he saved them for his name’s sake,</t> <t>to make his mighty power known.</t>
- 9<t>He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up;</t> <t>he led them through the depths as through a desert.</t>
- 10<t>He saved them from the hand of the foe;</t> <t>from the hand of the enemy he redeemed them.</t>
- 11<t>The waters covered their adversaries;</t> <t>not one of them survived.</t>
- 12<t>Then they believed his promises</t> <t>and sang his praise. <pb/></t>
- 13<t>But they soon forgot what he had done</t> <t>and did not wait for his plan to unfold.</t>
- 14<t>In the desert they gave in to their craving;</t> <t>in the wilderness they put God to the test.</t>
- 15<t>So he gave them what they asked for,</t> <t>but sent a wasting disease among them. <pb/></t>
- 16<t>In the camp they grew envious of Moses</t> <t>and of Aaron, who was consecrated to the LORD.</t>
- 17<t>The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan;</t> <t>it buried the company of Abiram.</t>
- 18<t>Fire blazed among their followers;</t> <t>a flame consumed the wicked.</t>
- 19<t>At Horeb they made a calf</t> <t>and worshiped an idol cast from metal.</t>
- 20<t>They exchanged their glorious God</t> <t>for an image of a bull, which eats grass.</t>
- 21<t>They forgot the God who saved them,</t> <t>who had done great things in Egypt,</t>
- 22<t>miracles in the land of Ham</t> <t>and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.</t>
- 23<t>So he said he would destroy them—</t> <t>had not Moses, his chosen one,</t> <t>stood in the breach before him</t> <t>to keep his wrath from destroying them. <pb/></t>
- 24<t>Then they despised the pleasant land;</t> <t>they did not believe his promise.</t>
- 25<t>They grumbled in their tents</t> <t>and did not obey the LORD.</t>
- 26<t>So he swore to them with uplifted hand</t> <t>that he would make them fall in the wilderness,</t>
- 27<t>make their descendants fall among the nations</t> <t>and scatter them throughout the lands. <pb/></t>
- 28<t>They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor</t> <t>and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods;</t>
- 29<t>they aroused the LORD’s anger by their wicked deeds,</t> <t>and a plague broke out among them.</t>
- 30<t>But Phinehas stood up and intervened,</t> <t>and the plague was checked.</t>
- 31<t>This was credited to him as righteousness</t> <t>for endless generations to come.</t>
- 32<t>By the waters of Meribah they angered the LORD,</t> <t>and trouble came to Moses because of them;</t>
- 33<t>for they rebelled against the Spirit of God,</t> <t>and rash words came from Moses’ lips.<f>[191]</f> <pb/></t>
- 34<t>They did not destroy the peoples</t> <t>as the LORD had commanded them,</t>
- 35<t>but they mingled with the nations</t> <t>and adopted their customs.</t>
- 36<t>They worshiped their idols,</t> <t>which became a snare to them.</t>
- 37<t>They sacrificed their sons</t> <t>and their daughters to false gods.</t>
- 38<t>They shed innocent blood,</t> <t>the blood of their sons and daughters,</t> <t>whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,</t> <t>and the land was desecrated by their blood.</t>
- 39<t>They defiled themselves by what they did;</t> <t>by their deeds they prostituted themselves. <pb/></t>
- 40<t>Therefore the LORD was angry with his people</t> <t>and abhorred his inheritance.</t>
- 41<t>He gave them into the hands of the nations,</t> <t>and their foes ruled over them.</t>
- 42<t>Their enemies oppressed them</t> <t>and subjected them to their power.</t>
- 43<t>Many times he delivered them,</t> <t>but they were bent on rebellion</t> <t>and they wasted away in their sin.</t>
- 44<t>Yet he took note of their distress</t> <t>when he heard their cry;</t>
- 45<t>for their sake he remembered his covenant</t> <t>and out of his great love he relented.</t>
- 46<t>He caused all who held them captive</t> <t>to show them mercy. <pb/></t>
- 47<t>Save us, LORD our God,</t> <t>and gather us from the nations,</t> <t>that we may give thanks to your holy name</t> <t>and glory in your praise. <pb/></t>
- 48<t>Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel,</t> <t>from everlasting to everlasting. <pb/>Let all the people say, “Amen!” <pb/>Praise the LORD.</t>
