Psalms 10
- 1<pb/><t>Why, LORD, do you stand far off?</t> <t>Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? <pb/></t>
- 2<t>In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,</t> <t>who are caught in the schemes he devises.</t>
- 3<t>He boasts about the cravings of his heart;</t> <t>he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.</t>
- 4<t>In his pride the wicked man does not seek him;</t> <t>in all his thoughts there is no room for God.</t>
- 5<t>His ways are always prosperous;</t> <t>your laws are rejected by<f>[19]</f> him;</t> <t>he sneers at all his enemies.</t>
- 6<t>He says to himself, “Nothing will ever shake me.”</t> <t>He swears, “No one will ever do me harm.” <pb/></t>
- 7<t>His mouth is full of lies and threats;</t> <t>trouble and evil are under his tongue.</t>
- 8<t>He lies in wait near the villages;</t> <t>from ambush he murders the innocent.</t> <t>His eyes watch in secret for his victims;</t>
- 9<t>like a lion in cover he lies in wait.</t> <t>He lies in wait to catch the helpless;</t> <t>he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.</t>
- 10<t>His victims are crushed, they collapse;</t> <t>they fall under his strength.</t>
- 11<t>He says to himself, “God will never notice;</t> <t>he covers his face and never sees.” <pb/></t>
- 12<t>Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God.</t> <t>Do not forget the helpless.</t>
- 13<t>Why does the wicked man revile God?</t> <t>Why does he say to himself,</t> <t>“He won’t call me to account”?</t>
- 14<t>But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted;</t> <t>you consider their grief and take it in hand.</t> <t>The victims commit themselves to you;</t> <t>you are the helper of the fatherless.</t>
- 15<t>Break the arm of the wicked man;</t> <t>call the evildoer to account for his wickedness</t> <t>that would not otherwise be found out. <pb/></t>
- 16<t>The LORD is King for ever and ever;</t> <t>the nations will perish from his land.</t>
- 17<t>You, LORD, hear the desire of the afflicted;</t> <t>you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,</t>
- 18<t>defending the fatherless and the oppressed,</t> <t>so that mere earthly mortals</t> <t>will never again strike terror.</t>
