Proverbs 16
- 1<pb/><t>To humans belong the plans of the heart,</t> <t>but from the LORD comes the proper answer of the tongue. <pb/></t>
- 2<t>All a person’s ways seem pure to them,</t> <t>but motives are weighed by the LORD. <pb/></t>
- 3<t>Commit to the LORD whatever you do,</t> <t>and he will establish your plans. <pb/></t>
- 4<t>The LORD works out everything to its proper end—</t> <t>even the wicked for a day of disaster. <pb/></t>
- 5<t>The LORD detests all the proud of heart.</t> <t>Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished. <pb/></t>
- 6<t>Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for;</t> <t>through the fear of the LORD evil is avoided. <pb/></t>
- 7<t>When the LORD takes pleasure in anyone’s way,</t> <t>he causes their enemies to make peace with them. <pb/></t>
- 8<t>Better a little with righteousness</t> <t>than much gain with injustice. <pb/></t>
- 9<t>In their hearts humans plan their course,</t> <t>but the LORD establishes their steps. <pb/></t>
- 10<t>The lips of a king speak as an oracle,</t> <t>and his mouth does not betray justice. <pb/></t>
- 11<t>Honest scales and balances belong to the LORD;</t> <t>all the weights in the bag are of his making. <pb/></t>
- 12<t>Kings detest wrongdoing,</t> <t>for a throne is established through righteousness. <pb/></t>
- 13<t>Kings take pleasure in honest lips;</t> <t>they value the one who speaks what is right. <pb/></t>
- 14<t>A king’s wrath is a messenger of death,</t> <t>but the wise will appease it. <pb/></t>
- 15<t>When a king’s face brightens, it means life;</t> <t>his favor is like a rain cloud in spring. <pb/></t>
- 16<t>How much better to get wisdom than gold,</t> <t>to get insight rather than silver! <pb/></t>
- 17<t>The highway of the upright avoids evil;</t> <t>those who guard their ways preserve their lives. <pb/></t>
- 18<t>Pride goes before destruction,</t> <t>a haughty spirit before a fall. <pb/></t>
- 19<t>Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed</t> <t>than to share plunder with the proud. <pb/></t>
- 20<t>Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers,<f>[31]</f></t> <t>and blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD. <pb/></t>
- 21<t>The wise in heart are called discerning,</t> <t>and gracious words promote instruction.<f>[32]</f> <pb/></t>
- 22<t>Prudence is a fountain of life to the prudent,</t> <t>but folly brings punishment to fools. <pb/></t>
- 23<t>The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent,</t> <t>and their lips promote instruction.<f>[33]</f> <pb/></t>
- 24<t>Gracious words are a honeycomb,</t> <t>sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. <pb/></t>
- 25<t>There is a way that appears to be right,</t> <t>but in the end it leads to death. <pb/></t>
- 26<t>The appetite of laborers works for them;</t> <t>their hunger drives them on. <pb/></t>
- 27<t>A scoundrel plots evil,</t> <t>and on their lips it is like a scorching fire. <pb/></t>
- 28<t>A perverse person stirs up conflict,</t> <t>and a gossip separates close friends. <pb/></t>
- 29<t>A violent person entices their neighbor</t> <t>and leads them down a path that is not good. <pb/></t>
- 30<t>Whoever winks with their eye is plotting perversity;</t> <t>whoever purses their lips is bent on evil. <pb/></t>
- 31<t>Gray hair is a crown of splendor;</t> <t>it is attained in the way of righteousness. <pb/></t>
- 32<t>Better a patient person than a warrior,</t> <t>one with self-control than one who takes a city. <pb/></t>
- 33<t>The lot is cast into the lap,</t> <t>but its every decision is from the LORD.</t>
