Proverbs 17
- 1<pb/><t>Better a dry crust with peace and quiet</t> <t>than a house full of feasting, with strife. <pb/></t>
- 2<t>A prudent servant will rule over a disgraceful son</t> <t>and will share the inheritance as one of the family. <pb/></t>
- 3<t>The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold,</t> <t>but the LORD tests the heart. <pb/></t>
- 4<t>A wicked person listens to deceitful lips;</t> <t>a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue. <pb/></t>
- 5<t>Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker;</t> <t>whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished. <pb/></t>
- 6<t>Children’s children are a crown to the aged,</t> <t>and parents are the pride of their children. <pb/></t>
- 7<t>Eloquent lips are unsuited to a godless fool—</t> <t>how much worse lying lips to a ruler! <pb/></t>
- 8<t>A bribe is seen as a charm by the one who gives it;</t> <t>they think success will come at every turn. <pb/></t>
- 9<t>Whoever would foster love covers over an offense,</t> <t>but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends. <pb/></t>
- 10<t>A rebuke impresses a discerning person</t> <t>more than a hundred lashes a fool. <pb/></t>
- 11<t>Evildoers foster rebellion against God;</t> <t>the messenger of death will be sent against them. <pb/></t>
- 12<t>Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs</t> <t>than a fool bent on folly. <pb/></t>
- 13<t>Evil will never leave the house</t> <t>of one who pays back evil for good. <pb/></t>
- 14<t>Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam;</t> <t>so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out. <pb/></t>
- 15<t>Acquitting the guilty and condemning the innocent—</t> <t>the LORD detests them both. <pb/></t>
- 16<t>Why should fools have money in hand to buy wisdom,</t> <t>when they are not able to understand it? <pb/></t>
- 17<t>A friend loves at all times,</t> <t>and a brother is born for a time of adversity. <pb/></t>
- 18<t>One who has no sense shakes hands in pledge</t> <t>and puts up security for a neighbor. <pb/></t>
- 19<t>Whoever loves a quarrel loves sin;</t> <t>whoever builds a high gate invites destruction. <pb/></t>
- 20<t>One whose heart is corrupt does not prosper;</t> <t>one whose tongue is perverse falls into trouble. <pb/></t>
- 21<t>To have a fool for a child brings grief;</t> <t>there is no joy for the parent of a godless fool. <pb/></t>
- 22<t>A cheerful heart is good medicine,</t> <t>but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. <pb/></t>
- 23<t>The wicked accept bribes in secret</t> <t>to pervert the course of justice. <pb/></t>
- 24<t>A discerning person keeps wisdom in view,</t> <t>but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth. <pb/></t>
- 25<t>A foolish son brings grief to his father</t> <t>and bitterness to the mother who bore him. <pb/></t>
- 26<t>If imposing a fine on the innocent is not good,</t> <t>surely to flog honest officials is not right. <pb/></t>
- 27<t>The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint,</t> <t>and whoever has understanding is even-tempered. <pb/></t>
- 28<t>Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent,</t> <t>and discerning if they hold their tongues.</t>
