Isaiah 64

  1. 1<pb/><t><f>[121]</f>Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down,</t> <t>that the mountains would tremble before you!</t>
  2. 2<t>As when fire sets twigs ablaze</t> <t>and causes water to boil,</t> <t>come down to make your name known to your enemies</t> <t>and cause the nations to quake before you!</t>
  3. 3<t>For when you did awesome things that we did not expect,</t> <t>you came down, and the mountains trembled before you.</t>
  4. 4<t>Since ancient times no one has heard,</t> <t>no ear has perceived,</t> <t>no eye has seen any God besides you,</t> <t>who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.</t>
  5. 5<t>You come to the help of those who gladly do right,</t> <t>who remember your ways.</t> <t>But when we continued to sin against them,</t> <t>you were angry.</t> <t>How then can we be saved?</t>
  6. 6<t>All of us have become like one who is unclean,</t> <t>and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;</t> <t>we all shrivel up like a leaf,</t> <t>and like the wind our sins sweep us away.</t>
  7. 7<t>No one calls on your name</t> <t>or strives to lay hold of you;</t> <t>for you have hidden your face from us</t> <t>and have given us over to<f>[122]</f> our sins. <pb/></t>
  8. 8<t>Yet you, LORD, are our Father.</t> <t>We are the clay, you are the potter;</t> <t>we are all the work of your hand.</t>
  9. 9<t>Do not be angry beyond measure, LORD;</t> <t>do not remember our sins forever.</t> <t>Oh, look on us, we pray,</t> <t>for we are all your people.</t>
  10. 10<t>Your sacred cities have become a wasteland;</t> <t>even Zion is a wasteland, Jerusalem a desolation.</t>
  11. 11<t>Our holy and glorious temple, where our ancestors praised you,</t> <t>has been burned with fire,</t> <t>and all that we treasured lies in ruins.</t>
  12. 12<t>After all this, LORD, will you hold yourself back?</t> <t>Will you keep silent and punish us beyond measure?</t>
