Isaiah 63
- 1<pb/><t>Who is this coming from Edom,</t> <t>from Bozrah, with his garments stained crimson?</t> <t>Who is this, robed in splendor,</t> <t>striding forward in the greatness of his strength? <pb/>“It is I, proclaiming victory,</t> <t>mighty to save.” <pb/></t>
- 2<t>Why are your garments red,</t> <t>like those of one treading the winepress? <pb/></t>
- 3<t>“I have trodden the winepress alone;</t> <t>from the nations no one was with me.</t> <t>I trampled them in my anger</t> <t>and trod them down in my wrath;</t> <t>their blood spattered my garments,</t> <t>and I stained all my clothing.</t>
- 4<t>It was for me the day of vengeance;</t> <t>the year for me to redeem had come.</t>
- 5<t>I looked, but there was no one to help,</t> <t>I was appalled that no one gave support;</t> <t>so my own arm achieved salvation for me,</t> <t>and my own wrath sustained me.</t>
- 6<t>I trampled the nations in my anger;</t> <t>in my wrath I made them drunk</t> <t>and poured their blood on the ground.”</t>
- 7<t>I will tell of the kindnesses of the LORD,</t> <t>the deeds for which he is to be praised,</t> <t>according to all the LORD has done for us—</t> <t>yes, the many good things</t> <t>he has done for Israel,</t> <t>according to his compassion and many kindnesses.</t>
- 8<t>He said, “Surely they are my people,</t> <t>children who will be true to me”;</t> <t>and so he became their Savior.</t>
- 9<t>In all their distress he too was distressed,</t> <t>and the angel of his presence saved them.<f>[118]</f></t> <t>In his love and mercy he redeemed them;</t> <t>he lifted them up and carried them</t> <t>all the days of old.</t>
- 10<t>Yet they rebelled</t> <t>and grieved his Holy Spirit.</t> <t>So he turned and became their enemy</t> <t>and he himself fought against them. <pb/></t>
- 11<t>Then his people recalled<f>[119]</f> the days of old,</t> <t>the days of Moses and his people—</t> <t>where is he who brought them through the sea,</t> <t>with the shepherd of his flock?</t> <t>Where is he who set</t> <t>his Holy Spirit among them,</t>
- 12<t>who sent his glorious arm of power</t> <t>to be at Moses’ right hand,</t> <t>who divided the waters before them,</t> <t>to gain for himself everlasting renown,</t>
- 13<t>who led them through the depths?</t> <t>Like a horse in open country,</t> <t>they did not stumble;</t>
- 14<t>like cattle that go down to the plain,</t> <t>they were given rest by the Spirit of the LORD.</t> <t>This is how you guided your people</t> <t>to make for yourself a glorious name. <pb/></t>
- 15<t>Look down from heaven and see,</t> <t>from your lofty throne, holy and glorious.</t> <t>Where are your zeal and your might?</t> <t>Your tenderness and compassion are withheld from us.</t>
- 16<t>But you are our Father,</t> <t>though Abraham does not know us</t> <t>or Israel acknowledge us;</t> <t>you, LORD, are our Father,</t> <t>our Redeemer from of old is your name.</t>
- 17<t>Why, LORD, do you make us wander from your ways</t> <t>and harden our hearts so we do not revere you?</t> <t>Return for the sake of your servants,</t> <t>the tribes that are your inheritance.</t>
- 18<t>For a little while your people possessed your holy place,</t> <t>but now our enemies have trampled down your sanctuary.</t>
- 19<t>We are yours from of old;</t> <t>but you have not ruled over them,</t> <t>they have not been called<f>[120]</f> by your name.</t>
