Isaiah 65
- 1<pb/><t>“I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me;</t> <t>I was found by those who did not seek me.</t> <t>To a nation that did not call on my name,</t> <t>I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’</t>
- 2<t>All day long I have held out my hands</t> <t>to an obstinate people,</t> <t>who walk in ways not good,</t> <t>pursuing their own imaginations—</t>
- 3<t>a people who continually provoke me</t> <t>to my very face,</t> <t>offering sacrifices in gardens</t> <t>and burning incense on altars of brick;</t>
- 4<t>who sit among the graves</t> <t>and spend their nights keeping secret vigil;</t> <t>who eat the flesh of pigs,</t> <t>and whose pots hold broth of impure meat;</t>
- 5<t>who say, ‘Keep away; don’t come near me,</t> <t>for I am too sacred for you!’</t> <t>Such people are smoke in my nostrils,</t> <t>a fire that keeps burning all day. <pb/></t>
- 6<t>“See, it stands written before me:</t> <t>I will not keep silent but will pay back in full;</t> <t>I will pay it back into their laps—</t>
- 7<t>both your sins and the sins of your ancestors,”</t> <t>says the LORD.</t> <t>“Because they burned sacrifices on the mountains</t> <t>and defied me on the hills,</t> <t>I will measure into their laps</t> <t>the full payment for their former deeds.”</t>
- 8<pb/>This is what the LORD says: <pb/><t>“As when juice is still found in a cluster of grapes</t> <t>and people say, ‘Don’t destroy it,</t> <t>there is still a blessing in it,’</t> <t>so will I do in behalf of my servants;</t> <t>I will not destroy them all.</t>
- 9<t>I will bring forth descendants from Jacob,</t> <t>and from Judah those who will possess my mountains;</t> <t>my chosen people will inherit them,</t> <t>and there will my servants live.</t>
- 10<t>Sharon will become a pasture for flocks,</t> <t>and the Valley of Achor a resting place for herds,</t> <t>for my people who seek me. <pb/></t>
- 11<t>“But as for you who forsake the LORD</t> <t>and forget my holy mountain,</t> <t>who spread a table for Fortune</t> <t>and fill bowls of mixed wine for Destiny,</t>
- 12<t>I will destine you for the sword,</t> <t>and all of you will fall in the slaughter;</t> <t>for I called but you did not answer,</t> <t>I spoke but you did not listen.</t> <t>You did evil in my sight</t> <t>and chose what displeases me.”</t>
- 13<pb/>Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: <pb/><t>“My servants will eat,</t> <t>but you will go hungry;</t> <t>my servants will drink,</t> <t>but you will go thirsty;</t> <t>my servants will rejoice,</t> <t>but you will be put to shame.</t>
- 14<t>My servants will sing</t> <t>out of the joy of their hearts,</t> <t>but you will cry out</t> <t>from anguish of heart</t> <t>and wail in brokenness of spirit.</t>
- 15<t>You will leave your name</t> <t>for my chosen ones to use in their curses;</t> <t>the Sovereign LORD will put you to death,</t> <t>but to his servants he will give another name.</t>
- 16<t>Whoever invokes a blessing in the land</t> <t>will do so by the one true God;</t> <t>whoever takes an oath in the land</t> <t>will swear by the one true God.</t> <t>For the past troubles will be forgotten</t> <t>and hidden from my eyes.</t>
- 17<t>“See, I will create</t> <t>new heavens and a new earth.</t> <t>The former things will not be remembered,</t> <t>nor will they come to mind.</t>
- 18<t>But be glad and rejoice forever</t> <t>in what I will create,</t> <t>for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight</t> <t>and its people a joy.</t>
- 19<t>I will rejoice over Jerusalem</t> <t>and take delight in my people;</t> <t>the sound of weeping and of crying</t> <t>will be heard in it no more. <pb/></t>
- 20<t>“Never again will there be in it</t> <t>an infant who lives but a few days,</t> <t>or an old man who does not live out his years;</t> <t>the one who dies at a hundred</t> <t>will be thought a mere child;</t> <t>the one who fails to reach<f>[123]</f> a hundred</t> <t>will be considered accursed.</t>
- 21<t>They will build houses and dwell in them;</t> <t>they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.</t>
- 22<t>No longer will they build houses and others live in them,</t> <t>or plant and others eat.</t> <t>For as the days of a tree,</t> <t>so will be the days of my people;</t> <t>my chosen ones will long enjoy</t> <t>the work of their hands.</t>
- 23<t>They will not labor in vain,</t> <t>nor will they bear children doomed to misfortune;</t> <t>for they will be a people blessed by the LORD,</t> <t>they and their descendants with them.</t>
- 24<t>Before they call I will answer;</t> <t>while they are still speaking I will hear.</t>
- 25<t>The wolf and the lamb will feed together,</t> <t>and the lion will eat straw like the ox,</t> <t>and dust will be the serpent’s food.</t> <t>They will neither harm nor destroy</t> <t>on all my holy mountain,”</t> <t>says the LORD.</t>
