Isaiah 46
- 1<pb/><t>Bel bows down, Nebo stoops low;</t> <t>their idols are borne by beasts of burden.<f>[90]</f></t> <t>The images that are carried about are burdensome,</t> <t>a burden for the weary.</t>
- 2<t>They stoop and bow down together;</t> <t>unable to rescue the burden,</t> <t>they themselves go off into captivity. <pb/></t>
- 3<t>“Listen to me, you descendants of Jacob,</t> <t>all the remnant of the people of Israel,</t> <t>you whom I have upheld since your birth,</t> <t>and have carried since you were born.</t>
- 4<t>Even to your old age and gray hairs</t> <t>I am he, I am he who will sustain you.</t> <t>I have made you and I will carry you;</t> <t>I will sustain you and I will rescue you. <pb/></t>
- 5<t>“With whom will you compare me or count me equal?</t> <t>To whom will you liken me that we may be compared?</t>
- 6<t>Some pour out gold from their bags</t> <t>and weigh out silver on the scales;</t> <t>they hire a goldsmith to make it into a god,</t> <t>and they bow down and worship it.</t>
- 7<t>They lift it to their shoulders and carry it;</t> <t>they set it up in its place, and there it stands.</t> <t>From that spot it cannot move.</t> <t>Even though someone cries out to it, it cannot answer;</t> <t>it cannot save them from their troubles. <pb/></t>
- 8<t>“Remember this, keep it in mind,</t> <t>take it to heart, you rebels.</t>
- 9<t>Remember the former things, those of long ago;</t> <t>I am God, and there is no other;</t> <t>I am God, and there is none like me.</t>
- 10<t>I make known the end from the beginning,</t> <t>from ancient times, what is still to come.</t> <t>I say, ‘My purpose will stand,</t> <t>and I will do all that I please.’</t>
- 11<t>From the east I summon a bird of prey;</t> <t>from a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose.</t> <t>What I have said, that I will bring about;</t> <t>what I have planned, that I will do.</t>
- 12<t>Listen to me, you stubborn-hearted,</t> <t>you who are now far from my righteousness.</t>
- 13<t>I am bringing my righteousness near,</t> <t>it is not far away;</t> <t>and my salvation will not be delayed.</t> <t>I will grant salvation to Zion,</t> <t>my splendor to Israel.</t>
