Isaiah 47

  1. 1<pb/><t>“Go down, sit in the dust,</t> <t>Virgin Daughter Babylon;</t> <t>sit on the ground without a throne,</t> <t>queen city of the Babylonians.<f>[91]</f></t> <t>No more will you be called</t> <t>tender or delicate.</t>
  2. 2<t>Take millstones and grind flour;</t> <t>take off your veil.</t> <t>Lift up your skirts, bare your legs,</t> <t>and wade through the streams.</t>
  3. 3<t>Your nakedness will be exposed</t> <t>and your shame uncovered.</t> <t>I will take vengeance;</t> <t>I will spare no one.” <pb/></t>
  4. 4<t>Our Redeemer—the LORD Almighty is his name—</t> <t>is the Holy One of Israel. <pb/></t>
  5. 5<t>“Sit in silence, go into darkness,</t> <t>queen city of the Babylonians;</t> <t>no more will you be called</t> <t>queen of kingdoms.</t>
  6. 6<t>I was angry with my people</t> <t>and desecrated my inheritance;</t> <t>I gave them into your hand,</t> <t>and you showed them no mercy.</t> <t>Even on the aged</t> <t>you laid a very heavy yoke.</t>
  7. 7<t>You said, ‘I am forever—</t> <t>the eternal queen!’</t> <t>But you did not consider these things</t> <t>or reflect on what might happen. <pb/></t>
  8. 8<t>“Now then, listen, you lover of pleasure,</t> <t>lounging in your security</t> <t>and saying to yourself,</t> <t>‘I am, and there is none besides me.</t> <t>I will never be a widow</t> <t>or suffer the loss of children.’</t>
  9. 9<t>Both of these will overtake you</t> <t>in a moment, on a single day:</t> <t>loss of children and widowhood.</t> <t>They will come upon you in full measure,</t> <t>in spite of your many sorceries</t> <t>and all your potent spells.</t>
  10. 10<t>You have trusted in your wickedness</t> <t>and have said, ‘No one sees me.’</t> <t>Your wisdom and knowledge mislead you</t> <t>when you say to yourself,</t> <t>‘I am, and there is none besides me.’</t>
  11. 11<t>Disaster will come upon you,</t> <t>and you will not know how to conjure it away.</t> <t>A calamity will fall upon you</t> <t>that you cannot ward off with a ransom;</t> <t>a catastrophe you cannot foresee</t> <t>will suddenly come upon you. <pb/></t>
  12. 12<t>“Keep on, then, with your magic spells</t> <t>and with your many sorceries,</t> <t>which you have labored at since childhood.</t> <t>Perhaps you will succeed,</t> <t>perhaps you will cause terror.</t>
  13. 13<t>All the counsel you have received has only worn you out!</t> <t>Let your astrologers come forward,</t> <t>those stargazers who make predictions month by month,</t> <t>let them save you from what is coming upon you.</t>
  14. 14<t>Surely they are like stubble;</t> <t>the fire will burn them up.</t> <t>They cannot even save themselves</t> <t>from the power of the flame.</t> <t>These are not coals for warmth;</t> <t>this is not a fire to sit by.</t>
  15. 15<t>That is all they are to you—</t> <t>these you have dealt with</t> <t>and labored with since childhood.</t> <t>All of them go on in their error;</t> <t>there is not one that can save you.</t>
