Isaiah 34

  1. 1<pb/><t>Come near, you nations, and listen;</t> <t>pay attention, you peoples!</t> <t>Let the earth hear, and all that is in it,</t> <t>the world, and all that comes out of it!</t>
  2. 2<t>The LORD is angry with all nations;</t> <t>his wrath is on all their armies.</t> <t>He will totally destroy<f>[68]</f> them,</t> <t>he will give them over to slaughter.</t>
  3. 3<t>Their slain will be thrown out,</t> <t>their dead bodies will stink;</t> <t>the mountains will be soaked with their blood.</t>
  4. 4<t>All the stars in the sky will be dissolved</t> <t>and the heavens rolled up like a scroll;</t> <t>all the starry host will fall</t> <t>like withered leaves from the vine,</t> <t>like shriveled figs from the fig tree. <pb/></t>
  5. 5<t>My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens;</t> <t>see, it descends in judgment on Edom,</t> <t>the people I have totally destroyed.</t>
  6. 6<t>The sword of the LORD is bathed in blood,</t> <t>it is covered with fat—</t> <t>the blood of lambs and goats,</t> <t>fat from the kidneys of rams.</t> <t>For the LORD has a sacrifice in Bozrah</t> <t>and a great slaughter in the land of Edom.</t>
  7. 7<t>And the wild oxen will fall with them,</t> <t>the bull calves and the great bulls.</t> <t>Their land will be drenched with blood,</t> <t>and the dust will be soaked with fat. <pb/></t>
  8. 8<t>For the LORD has a day of vengeance,</t> <t>a year of retribution, to uphold Zion’s cause.</t>
  9. 9<t>Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch,</t> <t>her dust into burning sulfur;</t> <t>her land will become blazing pitch!</t>
  10. 10<t>It will not be quenched night or day;</t> <t>its smoke will rise forever.</t> <t>From generation to generation it will lie desolate;</t> <t>no one will ever pass through it again.</t>
  11. 11<t>The desert owl<f>[69]</f> and screech owl<f>[70]</f> will possess it;</t> <t>the great owl<f>[71]</f> and the raven will nest there.</t> <t>God will stretch out over Edom</t> <t>the measuring line of chaos</t> <t>and the plumb line of desolation.</t>
  12. 12<t>Her nobles will have nothing there to be called a kingdom,</t> <t>all her princes will vanish away.</t>
  13. 13<t>Thorns will overrun her citadels,</t> <t>nettles and brambles her strongholds.</t> <t>She will become a haunt for jackals,</t> <t>a home for owls.</t>
  14. 14<t>Desert creatures will meet with hyenas,</t> <t>and wild goats will bleat to each other;</t> <t>there the night creatures will also lie down</t> <t>and find for themselves places of rest.</t>
  15. 15<t>The owl will nest there and lay eggs,</t> <t>she will hatch them, and care for her young</t> <t>under the shadow of her wings;</t> <t>there also the falcons will gather,</t> <t>each with its mate.</t>
  16. 16<pb/>Look in the scroll of the LORD and read: <pb/><t>None of these will be missing,</t> <t>not one will lack her mate.</t> <t>For it is his mouth that has given the order,</t> <t>and his Spirit will gather them together.</t>
  17. 17<t>He allots their portions;</t> <t>his hand distributes them by measure.</t> <t>They will possess it forever</t> <t>and dwell there from generation to generation.</t>
