Isaiah 33

  1. 1<pb/><t>Woe to you, destroyer,</t> <t>you who have not been destroyed!</t> <t>Woe to you, betrayer,</t> <t>you who have not been betrayed!</t> <t>When you stop destroying,</t> <t>you will be destroyed;</t> <t>when you stop betraying,</t> <t>you will be betrayed. <pb/></t>
  2. 2<t>LORD, be gracious to us;</t> <t>we long for you.</t> <t>Be our strength every morning,</t> <t>our salvation in time of distress.</t>
  3. 3<t>At the uproar of your army, the peoples flee;</t> <t>when you rise up, the nations scatter.</t>
  4. 4<t>Your plunder, O nations, is harvested as by young locusts;</t> <t>like a swarm of locusts people pounce on it. <pb/></t>
  5. 5<t>The LORD is exalted, for he dwells on high;</t> <t>he will fill Zion with his justice and righteousness.</t>
  6. 6<t>He will be the sure foundation for your times,</t> <t>a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge;</t> <t>the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure.<f>[66]</f> <pb/></t>
  7. 7<t>Look, their brave men cry aloud in the streets;</t> <t>the envoys of peace weep bitterly.</t>
  8. 8<t>The highways are deserted,</t> <t>no travelers are on the roads.</t> <t>The treaty is broken,</t> <t>its witnesses<f>[67]</f> are despised,</t> <t>no one is respected.</t>
  9. 9<t>The land dries up and wastes away,</t> <t>Lebanon is ashamed and withers;</t> <t>Sharon is like the Arabah,</t> <t>and Bashan and Carmel drop their leaves. <pb/></t>
  10. 10<t>“Now will I arise,” says the LORD.</t> <t>“Now will I be exalted;</t> <t>now will I be lifted up.</t>
  11. 11<t>You conceive chaff,</t> <t>you give birth to straw;</t> <t>your breath is a fire that consumes you.</t>
  12. 12<t>The peoples will be burned to ashes;</t> <t>like cut thornbushes they will be set ablaze.” <pb/></t>
  13. 13<t>You who are far away, hear what I have done;</t> <t>you who are near, acknowledge my power!</t>
  14. 14<t>The sinners in Zion are terrified;</t> <t>trembling grips the godless:</t> <t>“Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire?</t> <t>Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?”</t>
  15. 15<t>Those who walk righteously</t> <t>and speak what is right,</t> <t>who reject gain from extortion</t> <t>and keep their hands from accepting bribes,</t> <t>who stop their ears against plots of murder</t> <t>and shut their eyes against contemplating evil—</t>
  16. 16<t>they are the ones who will dwell on the heights,</t> <t>whose refuge will be the mountain fortress.</t> <t>Their bread will be supplied,</t> <t>and water will not fail them. <pb/></t>
  17. 17<t>Your eyes will see the king in his beauty</t> <t>and view a land that stretches afar.</t>
  18. 18<t>In your thoughts you will ponder the former terror:</t> <t>“Where is that chief officer?</t> <t>Where is the one who took the revenue?</t> <t>Where is the officer in charge of the towers?”</t>
  19. 19<t>You will see those arrogant people no more,</t> <t>people whose speech is obscure,</t> <t>whose language is strange and incomprehensible. <pb/></t>
  20. 20<t>Look on Zion, the city of our festivals;</t> <t>your eyes will see Jerusalem,</t> <t>a peaceful abode, a tent that will not be moved;</t> <t>its stakes will never be pulled up,</t> <t>nor any of its ropes broken.</t>
  21. 21<t>There the LORD will be our Mighty One.</t> <t>It will be like a place of broad rivers and streams.</t> <t>No galley with oars will ride them,</t> <t>no mighty ship will sail them.</t>
  22. 22<t>For the LORD is our judge,</t> <t>the LORD is our lawgiver,</t> <t>the LORD is our king;</t> <t>it is he who will save us. <pb/></t>
  23. 23<t>Your rigging hangs loose:</t> <t>The mast is not held secure,</t> <t>the sail is not spread.</t> <t>Then an abundance of spoils will be divided</t> <t>and even the lame will carry off plunder.</t>
  24. 24<t>No one living in Zion will say, “I am ill”;</t> <t>and the sins of those who dwell there will be forgiven.</t>
