Isaiah 26

  1. 1<pb/>In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: <pb/><t>We have a strong city;</t> <t>God makes salvation</t> <t>its walls and ramparts.</t>
  2. 2<t>Open the gates</t> <t>that the righteous nation may enter,</t> <t>the nation that keeps faith.</t>
  3. 3<t>You will keep in perfect peace</t> <t>those whose minds are steadfast,</t> <t>because they trust in you.</t>
  4. 4<t>Trust in the LORD forever,</t> <t>for the LORD, the LORD himself, is the Rock eternal.</t>
  5. 5<t>He humbles those who dwell on high,</t> <t>he lays the lofty city low;</t> <t>he levels it to the ground</t> <t>and casts it down to the dust.</t>
  6. 6<t>Feet trample it down—</t> <t>the feet of the oppressed,</t> <t>the footsteps of the poor. <pb/></t>
  7. 7<t>The path of the righteous is level;</t> <t>you, the Upright One, make the way of the righteous smooth.</t>
  8. 8<t>Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your laws,<f>[56]</f></t> <t>we wait for you;</t> <t>your name and renown</t> <t>are the desire of our hearts.</t>
  9. 9<t>My soul yearns for you in the night;</t> <t>in the morning my spirit longs for you.</t> <t>When your judgments come upon the earth,</t> <t>the people of the world learn righteousness.</t>
  10. 10<t>But when grace is shown to the wicked,</t> <t>they do not learn righteousness;</t> <t>even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil</t> <t>and do not regard the majesty of the LORD.</t>
  11. 11<t>LORD, your hand is lifted high,</t> <t>but they do not see it.</t> <t>Let them see your zeal for your people and be put to shame;</t> <t>let the fire reserved for your enemies consume them. <pb/></t>
  12. 12<t>LORD, you establish peace for us;</t> <t>all that we have accomplished you have done for us.</t>
  13. 13<t>LORD our God, other lords besides you have ruled over us,</t> <t>but your name alone do we honor.</t>
  14. 14<t>They are now dead, they live no more;</t> <t>their spirits do not rise.</t> <t>You punished them and brought them to ruin;</t> <t>you wiped out all memory of them.</t>
  15. 15<t>You have enlarged the nation, LORD;</t> <t>you have enlarged the nation.</t> <t>You have gained glory for yourself;</t> <t>you have extended all the borders of the land. <pb/></t>
  16. 16<t>LORD, they came to you in their distress;</t> <t>when you disciplined them,</t> <t>they could barely whisper a prayer.<f>[57]</f></t>
  17. 17<t>As a pregnant woman about to give birth</t> <t>writhes and cries out in her pain,</t> <t>so were we in your presence, LORD.</t>
  18. 18<t>We were with child, we writhed in labor,</t> <t>but we gave birth to wind.</t> <t>We have not brought salvation to the earth,</t> <t>and the people of the world have not come to life. <pb/></t>
  19. 19<t>But your dead will live, LORD;</t> <t>their bodies will rise—</t> <t>let those who dwell in the dust</t> <t>wake up and shout for joy—</t> <t>your dew is like the dew of the morning;</t> <t>the earth will give birth to her dead. <pb/></t>
  20. 20<t>Go, my people, enter your rooms</t> <t>and shut the doors behind you;</t> <t>hide yourselves for a little while</t> <t>until his wrath has passed by.</t>
  21. 21<t>See, the LORD is coming out of his dwelling</t> <t>to punish the people of the earth for their sins.</t> <t>The earth will disclose the blood shed on it;</t> <t>the earth will conceal its slain no longer.</t>
