Isaiah 17

  1. 1<pb/>A prophecy against Damascus: <pb/><t>“See, Damascus will no longer be a city</t> <t>but will become a heap of ruins.</t>
  2. 2<t>The cities of Aroer will be deserted</t> <t>and left to flocks, which will lie down,</t> <t>with no one to make them afraid.</t>
  3. 3<t>The fortified city will disappear from Ephraim,</t> <t>and royal power from Damascus;</t> <t>the remnant of Aram will be</t> <t>like the glory of the Israelites,”</t> <t>declares the LORD Almighty. <pb/></t>
  4. 4<t>“In that day the glory of Jacob will fade;</t> <t>the fat of his body will waste away.</t>
  5. 5<t>It will be as when reapers harvest the standing grain,</t> <t>gathering the grain in their arms—</t> <t>as when someone gleans heads of grain</t> <t>in the Valley of Rephaim.</t>
  6. 6<t>Yet some gleanings will remain,</t> <t>as when an olive tree is beaten,</t> <t>leaving two or three olives on the topmost branches,</t> <t>four or five on the fruitful boughs,”</t> <t>declares the LORD, the God of Israel. <pb/></t>
  7. 7<t>In that day people will look to their Maker</t> <t>and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.</t>
  8. 8<t>They will not look to the altars,</t> <t>the work of their hands,</t> <t>and they will have no regard for the Asherah poles<f>[42]</f></t> <t>and the incense altars their fingers have made.</t>
  9. 9<pb/>In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth. And all will be desolation.
  10. 10<pb/><t>You have forgotten God your Savior;</t> <t>you have not remembered the Rock, your fortress.</t> <t>Therefore, though you set out the finest plants</t> <t>and plant imported vines,</t>
  11. 11<t>though on the day you set them out, you make them grow,</t> <t>and on the morning when you plant them, you bring them to bud,</t> <t>yet the harvest will be as nothing</t> <t>in the day of disease and incurable pain. <pb/></t>
  12. 12<t>Woe to the many nations that rage—</t> <t>they rage like the raging sea!</t> <t>Woe to the peoples who roar—</t> <t>they roar like the roaring of great waters!</t>
  13. 13<t>Although the peoples roar like the roar of surging waters,</t> <t>when he rebukes them they flee far away,</t> <t>driven before the wind like chaff on the hills,</t> <t>like tumbleweed before a gale.</t>
  14. 14<t>In the evening, sudden terror!</t> <t>Before the morning, they are gone!</t> <t>This is the portion of those who loot us,</t> <t>the lot of those who plunder us.</t>
