Isaiah 16
- 1<pb/><t>Send lambs as tribute</t> <t>to the ruler of the land,</t> <t>from Sela, across the desert,</t> <t>to the mount of Daughter Zion.</t>
- 2<t>Like fluttering birds</t> <t>pushed from the nest,</t> <t>so are the women of Moab</t> <t>at the fords of the Arnon. <pb/></t>
- 3<t>“Make up your mind,” Moab says.</t> <t>“Render a decision.</t> <t>Make your shadow like night—</t> <t>at high noon.</t> <t>Hide the fugitives,</t> <t>do not betray the refugees.</t>
- 4<t>Let the Moabite fugitives stay with you;</t> <t>be their shelter from the destroyer.” <pb/>The oppressor will come to an end,</t> <t>and destruction will cease;</t> <t>the aggressor will vanish from the land.</t>
- 5<t>In love a throne will be established;</t> <t>in faithfulness a man will sit on it—</t> <t>one from the house<f>[40]</f> of David—</t> <t>one who in judging seeks justice</t> <t>and speeds the cause of righteousness. <pb/></t>
- 6<t>We have heard of Moab’s pride—</t> <t>how great is her arrogance!—</t> <t>of her conceit, her pride and her insolence;</t> <t>but her boasts are empty.</t>
- 7<t>Therefore the Moabites wail,</t> <t>they wail together for Moab.</t> <t>Lament and grieve</t> <t>for the raisin cakes of Kir Hareseth.</t>
- 8<t>The fields of Heshbon wither,</t> <t>the vines of Sibmah also.</t> <t>The rulers of the nations</t> <t>have trampled down the choicest vines,</t> <t>which once reached Jazer</t> <t>and spread toward the desert.</t> <t>Their shoots spread out</t> <t>and went as far as the sea.<f>[41]</f></t>
- 9<t>So I weep, as Jazer weeps,</t> <t>for the vines of Sibmah.</t> <t>Heshbon and Elealeh,</t> <t>I drench you with tears!</t> <t>The shouts of joy over your ripened fruit</t> <t>and over your harvests have been stilled.</t>
- 10<t>Joy and gladness are taken away from the orchards;</t> <t>no one sings or shouts in the vineyards;</t> <t>no one treads out wine at the presses,</t> <t>for I have put an end to the shouting.</t>
- 11<t>My heart laments for Moab like a harp,</t> <t>my inmost being for Kir Hareseth.</t>
- 12<t>When Moab appears at her high place,</t> <t>she only wears herself out;</t> <t>when she goes to her shrine to pray,</t> <t>it is to no avail.</t>
- 13<pb/>This is the word the LORD has already spoken concerning Moab.
- 14But now the LORD says: “Within three years, as a servant bound by contract would count them, Moab’s splendor and all her many people will be despised, and her survivors will be very few and feeble.”
