Hosea 13
- 1<pb/><t>When Ephraim spoke, people trembled;</t> <t>he was exalted in Israel.</t> <t>But he became guilty of Baal worship and died.</t>
- 2<t>Now they sin more and more;</t> <t>they make idols for themselves from their silver,</t> <t>cleverly fashioned images,</t> <t>all of them the work of craftsmen.</t> <t>It is said of these people,</t> <t>“They offer human sacrifices!</t> <t>They kiss<f>[33]</f> calf-idols!”</t>
- 3<t>Therefore they will be like the morning mist,</t> <t>like the early dew that disappears,</t> <t>like chaff swirling from a threshing floor,</t> <t>like smoke escaping through a window. <pb/></t>
- 4<t>“But I have been the LORD your God</t> <t>ever since you came out of Egypt.</t> <t>You shall acknowledge no God but me,</t> <t>no Savior except me.</t>
- 5<t>I cared for you in the wilderness,</t> <t>in the land of burning heat.</t>
- 6<t>When I fed them, they were satisfied;</t> <t>when they were satisfied, they became proud;</t> <t>then they forgot me.</t>
- 7<t>So I will be like a lion to them,</t> <t>like a leopard I will lurk by the path.</t>
- 8<t>Like a bear robbed of her cubs,</t> <t>I will attack them and rip them open;</t> <t>like a lion I will devour them—</t> <t>a wild animal will tear them apart. <pb/></t>
- 9<t>“You are destroyed, Israel,</t> <t>because you are against me, against your helper.</t>
- 10<t>Where is your king, that he may save you?</t> <t>Where are your rulers in all your towns,</t> <t>of whom you said,</t> <t>‘Give me a king and princes’?</t>
- 11<t>So in my anger I gave you a king,</t> <t>and in my wrath I took him away.</t>
- 12<t>The guilt of Ephraim is stored up,</t> <t>his sins are kept on record.</t>
- 13<t>Pains as of a woman in childbirth come to him,</t> <t>but he is a child without wisdom;</t> <t>when the time arrives,</t> <t>he doesn’t have the sense to come out of the womb. <pb/></t>
- 14<t>“I will deliver this people from the power of the grave;</t> <t>I will redeem them from death.</t> <t>Where, O death, are your plagues?</t> <t>Where, O grave, is your destruction? <pb/>“I will have no compassion,</t>
- 15<t>even though he thrives among his brothers.</t> <t>An east wind from the LORD will come,</t> <t>blowing in from the desert;</t> <t>his spring will fail</t> <t>and his well dry up.</t> <t>His storehouse will be plundered</t> <t>of all its treasures.</t>
- 16<t>The people of Samaria must bear their guilt,</t> <t>because they have rebelled against their God.</t> <t>They will fall by the sword;</t> <t>their little ones will be dashed to the ground,</t> <t>their pregnant women ripped open.”<f>[34]</f></t>
