Hosea 12
- 1<pb/><t><f>[30]</f>Ephraim feeds on the wind;</t> <t>he pursues the east wind all day</t> <t>and multiplies lies and violence.</t> <t>He makes a treaty with Assyria</t> <t>and sends olive oil to Egypt.</t>
- 2<t>The LORD has a charge to bring against Judah;</t> <t>he will punish Jacob<f>[31]</f> according to his ways</t> <t>and repay him according to his deeds.</t>
- 3<t>In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel;</t> <t>as a man he struggled with God.</t>
- 4<t>He struggled with the angel and overcame him;</t> <t>he wept and begged for his favor.</t> <t>He found him at Bethel</t> <t>and talked with him there—</t>
- 5<t>the LORD God Almighty,</t> <t>the LORD is his name!</t>
- 6<t>But you must return to your God;</t> <t>maintain love and justice,</t> <t>and wait for your God always. <pb/></t>
- 7<t>The merchant uses dishonest scales</t> <t>and loves to defraud.</t>
- 8<t>Ephraim boasts,</t> <t>“I am very rich; I have become wealthy.</t> <t>With all my wealth they will not find in me</t> <t>any iniquity or sin.” <pb/></t>
- 9<t>“I have been the LORD your God</t> <t>ever since you came out of Egypt;</t> <t>I will make you live in tents again,</t> <t>as in the days of your appointed festivals.</t>
- 10<t>I spoke to the prophets,</t> <t>gave them many visions</t> <t>and told parables through them.” <pb/></t>
- 11<t>Is Gilead wicked?</t> <t>Its people are worthless!</t> <t>Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal?</t> <t>Their altars will be like piles of stones</t> <t>on a plowed field.</t>
- 12<t>Jacob fled to the country of Aram<f>[32]</f>;</t> <t>Israel served to get a wife,</t> <t>and to pay for her he tended sheep.</t>
- 13<t>The LORD used a prophet to bring Israel up from Egypt,</t> <t>by a prophet he cared for him.</t>
- 14<t>But Ephraim has aroused his bitter anger;</t> <t>his Lord will leave on him the guilt of his bloodshed</t> <t>and will repay him for his contempt.</t>
