Hosea 11

  1. 1<pb/><t>“When Israel was a child, I loved him,</t> <t>and out of Egypt I called my son.</t>
  2. 2<t>But the more they were called,</t> <t>the more they went away from me.<f>[28]</f></t> <t>They sacrificed to the Baals</t> <t>and they burned incense to images.</t>
  3. 3<t>It was I who taught Ephraim to walk,</t> <t>taking them by the arms;</t> <t>but they did not realize</t> <t>it was I who healed them.</t>
  4. 4<t>I led them with cords of human kindness,</t> <t>with ties of love.</t> <t>To them I was like one who lifts</t> <t>a little child to the cheek,</t> <t>and I bent down to feed them. <pb/></t>
  5. 5<t>“Will they not return to Egypt</t> <t>and will not Assyria rule over them</t> <t>because they refuse to repent?</t>
  6. 6<t>A sword will flash in their cities;</t> <t>it will devour their false prophets</t> <t>and put an end to their plans.</t>
  7. 7<t>My people are determined to turn from me.</t> <t>Even though they call me God Most High,</t> <t>I will by no means exalt them. <pb/></t>
  8. 8<t>“How can I give you up, Ephraim?</t> <t>How can I hand you over, Israel?</t> <t>How can I treat you like Admah?</t> <t>How can I make you like Zeboyim?</t> <t>My heart is changed within me;</t> <t>all my compassion is aroused.</t>
  9. 9<t>I will not carry out my fierce anger,</t> <t>nor will I devastate Ephraim again.</t> <t>For I am God, and not a man—</t> <t>the Holy One among you.</t> <t>I will not come against their cities.</t>
  10. 10<t>They will follow the LORD;</t> <t>he will roar like a lion.</t> <t>When he roars,</t> <t>his children will come trembling from the west.</t>
  11. 11<t>They will come from Egypt,</t> <t>trembling like sparrows,</t> <t>from Assyria, fluttering like doves.</t> <t>I will settle them in their homes,”</t> <t>declares the LORD.</t>
  12. 12<t>Ephraim has surrounded me with lies,</t> <t>Israel with deceit.</t> <t>And Judah is unruly against God,</t> <t>even against the faithful Holy One.<f>[29]</f></t>
