Ecclesiastes 12
- 1<pb/><t>Remember your Creator</t> <t>in the days of your youth,</t> <t>before the days of trouble come</t> <t>and the years approach when you will say,</t> <t>“I find no pleasure in them”—</t>
- 2<t>before the sun and the light</t> <t>and the moon and the stars grow dark,</t> <t>and the clouds return after the rain;</t>
- 3<t>when the keepers of the house tremble,</t> <t>and the strong men stoop,</t> <t>when the grinders cease because they are few,</t> <t>and those looking through the windows grow dim;</t>
- 4<t>when the doors to the street are closed</t> <t>and the sound of grinding fades;</t> <t>when people rise up at the sound of birds,</t> <t>but all their songs grow faint;</t>
- 5<t>when people are afraid of heights</t> <t>and of dangers in the streets;</t> <t>when the almond tree blossoms</t> <t>and the grasshopper drags itself along</t> <t>and desire no longer is stirred.</t> <t>Then people go to their eternal home</t> <t>and mourners go about the streets. <pb/></t>
- 6<t>Remember him—before the silver cord is severed,</t> <t>and the golden bowl is broken;</t> <t>before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,</t> <t>and the wheel broken at the well,</t>
- 7<t>and the dust returns to the ground it came from,</t> <t>and the spirit returns to God who gave it. <pb/></t>
- 8<t>“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher.<f>[16]</f></t> <t>“Everything is meaningless!”</t>
- 9<pb/>Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.
- 10The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.
- 11<pb/>The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails—given by one shepherd.<f>[17]</f>
- 12Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. <pb/>Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.
- 13<pb/><t>Now all has been heard;</t> <t>here is the conclusion of the matter:</t> <t>Fear God and keep his commandments,</t> <t>for this is the duty of all mankind.</t>
- 14<t>For God will bring every deed into judgment,</t> <t>including every hidden thing,</t> <t>whether it is good or evil.</t>
