Amos 9

  1. 1<pb/>I saw the Lord standing by the altar, and he said: <pb/><t>“Strike the tops of the pillars</t> <t>so that the thresholds shake.</t> <t>Bring them down on the heads of all the people;</t> <t>those who are left I will kill with the sword.</t> <t>Not one will get away,</t> <t>none will escape.</t>
  2. 2<t>Though they dig down to the depths below,</t> <t>from there my hand will take them.</t> <t>Though they climb up to the heavens above,</t> <t>from there I will bring them down.</t>
  3. 3<t>Though they hide themselves on the top of Carmel,</t> <t>there I will hunt them down and seize them.</t> <t>Though they hide from my eyes at the bottom of the sea,</t> <t>there I will command the serpent to bite them.</t>
  4. 4<t>Though they are driven into exile by their enemies,</t> <t>there I will command the sword to slay them. <pb/>“I will keep my eye on them</t> <t>for harm and not for good.” <pb/></t>
  5. 5<t>The Lord, the LORD Almighty—</t> <t>he touches the earth and it melts,</t> <t>and all who live in it mourn;</t> <t>the whole land rises like the Nile,</t> <t>then sinks like the river of Egypt;</t>
  6. 6<t>he builds his lofty palace<f>[25]</f> in the heavens</t> <t>and sets its foundation<f>[26]</f> on the earth;</t> <t>he calls for the waters of the sea</t> <t>and pours them out over the face of the land—</t> <t>the LORD is his name. <pb/></t>
  7. 7<t>“Are not you Israelites</t> <t>the same to me as the Cushites<f>[27]</f>?”</t> <t>declares the LORD.</t> <t>“Did I not bring Israel up from Egypt,</t> <t>the Philistines from Caphtor<f>[28]</f></t> <t>and the Arameans from Kir? <pb/></t>
  8. 8<t>“Surely the eyes of the Sovereign LORD</t> <t>are on the sinful kingdom.</t> <t>I will destroy it</t> <t>from the face of the earth.</t> <t>Yet I will not totally destroy</t> <t>the descendants of Jacob,”</t> <t>declares the LORD.</t>
  9. 9<t>“For I will give the command,</t> <t>and I will shake the people of Israel</t> <t>among all the nations</t> <t>as grain is shaken in a sieve,</t> <t>and not a pebble will reach the ground.</t>
  10. 10<t>All the sinners among my people</t> <t>will die by the sword,</t> <t>all those who say,</t> <t>‘Disaster will not overtake or meet us.’</t>
  11. 11<pb/>“In that day <pb/><t>“I will restore David’s fallen shelter—</t> <t>I will repair its broken walls</t> <t>and restore its ruins—</t> <t>and will rebuild it as it used to be,</t>
  12. 12<t>so that they may possess the remnant of Edom</t> <t>and all the nations that bear my name,<f>[29]</f>”</t> <t>declares the LORD, who will do these things.</t>
  13. 13<pb/>“The days are coming,” declares the LORD, <pb/><t>“when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman</t> <t>and the planter by the one treading grapes.</t> <t>New wine will drip from the mountains</t> <t>and flow from all the hills,</t>
  14. 14<t>and I will bring my people Israel back from exile.<f>[30]</f> <pb/>“They will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them.</t> <t>They will plant vineyards and drink their wine;</t> <t>they will make gardens and eat their fruit.</t>
  15. 15<t>I will plant Israel in their own land,</t> <t>never again to be uprooted</t> <t>from the land I have given them,” <pb/>says the LORD your God.</t>
