Obadiah 1
- 1<pb/>The vision of Obadiah. <pb/>This is what the Sovereign LORD says about Edom— <pb/><t>We have heard a message from the LORD:</t> <t>An envoy was sent to the nations to say,</t> <t>“Rise, let us go against her for battle”— <pb/></t>
- 2<t>“See, I will make you small among the nations;</t> <t>you will be utterly despised.</t>
- 3<t>The pride of your heart has deceived you,</t> <t>you who live in the clefts of the rocks<f>[1]</f></t> <t>and make your home on the heights,</t> <t>you who say to yourself,</t> <t>‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’</t>
- 4<t>Though you soar like the eagle</t> <t>and make your nest among the stars,</t> <t>from there I will bring you down,”</t> <t>declares the LORD.</t>
- 5<t>“If thieves came to you,</t> <t>if robbers in the night—</t> <t>oh, what a disaster awaits you!—</t> <t>would they not steal only as much as they wanted?</t> <t>If grape pickers came to you,</t> <t>would they not leave a few grapes?</t>
- 6<t>But how Esau will be ransacked,</t> <t>his hidden treasures pillaged!</t>
- 7<t>All your allies will force you to the border;</t> <t>your friends will deceive and overpower you;</t> <t>those who eat your bread will set a trap for you,<f>[2]</f></t> <t>but you will not detect it. <pb/></t>
- 8<t>“In that day,” declares the LORD,</t> <t>“will I not destroy the wise men of Edom,</t> <t>those of understanding in the mountains of Esau?</t>
- 9<t>Your warriors, Teman, will be terrified,</t> <t>and everyone in Esau’s mountains</t> <t>will be cut down in the slaughter.</t>
- 10<t>Because of the violence against your brother Jacob,</t> <t>you will be covered with shame;</t> <t>you will be destroyed forever.</t>
- 11<t>On the day you stood aloof</t> <t>while strangers carried off his wealth</t> <t>and foreigners entered his gates</t> <t>and cast lots for Jerusalem,</t> <t>you were like one of them.</t>
- 12<t>You should not gloat over your brother</t> <t>in the day of his misfortune,</t> <t>nor rejoice over the people of Judah</t> <t>in the day of their destruction,</t> <t>nor boast so much</t> <t>in the day of their trouble.</t>
- 13<t>You should not march through the gates of my people</t> <t>in the day of their disaster,</t> <t>nor gloat over them in their calamity</t> <t>in the day of their disaster,</t> <t>nor seize their wealth</t> <t>in the day of their disaster.</t>
- 14<t>You should not wait at the crossroads</t> <t>to cut down their fugitives,</t> <t>nor hand over their survivors</t> <t>in the day of their trouble. <pb/></t>
- 15<t>“The day of the LORD is near</t> <t>for all nations.</t> <t>As you have done, it will be done to you;</t> <t>your deeds will return upon your own head.</t>
- 16<t>Just as you drank on my holy hill,</t> <t>so all the nations will drink continually;</t> <t>they will drink and drink</t> <t>and be as if they had never been.</t>
- 17<t>But on Mount Zion will be deliverance;</t> <t>it will be holy,</t> <t>and Jacob will possess his inheritance.</t>
- 18<t>Jacob will be a fire</t> <t>and Joseph a flame;</t> <t>Esau will be stubble,</t> <t>and they will set him on fire and destroy him.</t> <t>There will be no survivors</t> <t>from Esau.”</t> <t>The LORD has spoken. <pb/></t>
- 19<t>People from the Negev will occupy</t> <t>the mountains of Esau,</t> <t>and people from the foothills will possess</t> <t>the land of the Philistines.</t> <t>They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria,</t> <t>and Benjamin will possess Gilead.</t>
- 20<t>This company of Israelite exiles who are in Canaan</t> <t>will possess the land as far as Zarephath;</t> <t>the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad</t> <t>will possess the towns of the Negev.</t>
- 21<t>Deliverers will go up on<f>[3]</f> Mount Zion</t> <t>to govern the mountains of Esau.</t> <t>And the kingdom will be the LORD’s.</t>
