Amos 8

  1. 1<pb/>This is what the Sovereign LORD showed me: a basket of ripe fruit.
  2. 2“What do you see, Amos?” he asked. <pb/>“A basket of ripe fruit,” I answered. <pb/>Then the LORD said to me, “The time is ripe for my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.
  3. 3<pb/>“In that day,” declares the Sovereign LORD, “the songs in the temple will turn to wailing.<f>[23]</f> Many, many bodies—flung everywhere! Silence!”
  4. 4<pb/><t>Hear this, you who trample the needy</t> <t>and do away with the poor of the land,</t>
  5. 5<pb/>saying, <pb/><t>“When will the New Moon be over</t> <t>that we may sell grain,</t> <t>and the Sabbath be ended</t> <t>that we may market wheat?”—</t> <t>skimping on the measure,</t> <t>boosting the price</t> <t>and cheating with dishonest scales,</t>
  6. 6<t>buying the poor with silver</t> <t>and the needy for a pair of sandals,</t> <t>selling even the sweepings with the wheat.</t>
  7. 7<pb/>The LORD has sworn by himself, the Pride of Jacob: “I will never forget anything they have done.
  8. 8<pb/><t>“Will not the land tremble for this,</t> <t>and all who live in it mourn?</t> <t>The whole land will rise like the Nile;</t> <t>it will be stirred up and then sink</t> <t>like the river of Egypt.</t>
  9. 9<pb/>“In that day,” declares the Sovereign LORD, <pb/><t>“I will make the sun go down at noon</t> <t>and darken the earth in broad daylight.</t>
  10. 10<t>I will turn your religious festivals into mourning</t> <t>and all your singing into weeping.</t> <t>I will make all of you wear sackcloth</t> <t>and shave your heads.</t> <t>I will make that time like mourning for an only son</t> <t>and the end of it like a bitter day. <pb/></t>
  11. 11<t>“The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign LORD,</t> <t>“when I will send a famine through the land—</t> <t>not a famine of food or a thirst for water,</t> <t>but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD.</t>
  12. 12<t>People will stagger from sea to sea</t> <t>and wander from north to east,</t> <t>searching for the word of the LORD,</t> <t>but they will not find it.</t>
  13. 13<pb/>“In that day <pb/><t>“the lovely young women and strong young men</t> <t>will faint because of thirst.</t>
  14. 14<t>Those who swear by the sin of Samaria—</t> <t>who say, ‘As surely as your god lives, Dan,’</t> <t>or, ‘As surely as the god<f>[24]</f> of Beersheba lives’—</t> <t>they will fall, never to rise again.”</t>
