Amos 3
- 1<pb/>Hear this word, people of Israel, the word the LORD has spoken against you—against the whole family I brought up out of Egypt:
- 2<pb/><t>“You only have I chosen</t> <t>of all the families of the earth;</t> <t>therefore I will punish you</t> <t>for all your sins.” <pb/></t>
- 3<t>Do two walk together</t> <t>unless they have agreed to do so?</t>
- 4<t>Does a lion roar in the thicket</t> <t>when it has no prey?</t> <t>Does it growl in its den</t> <t>when it has caught nothing?</t>
- 5<t>Does a bird swoop down to a trap on the ground</t> <t>when no bait is there?</t> <t>Does a trap spring up from the ground</t> <t>if it has not caught anything?</t>
- 6<t>When a trumpet sounds in a city,</t> <t>do not the people tremble?</t> <t>When disaster comes to a city,</t> <t>has not the LORD caused it? <pb/></t>
- 7<t>Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing</t> <t>without revealing his plan</t> <t>to his servants the prophets. <pb/></t>
- 8<t>The lion has roared—</t> <t>who will not fear?</t> <t>The Sovereign LORD has spoken—</t> <t>who can but prophesy? <pb/></t>
- 9<t>Proclaim to the fortresses of Ashdod</t> <t>and to the fortresses of Egypt:</t> <t>“Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria;</t> <t>see the great unrest within her</t> <t>and the oppression among her people.” <pb/></t>
- 10<t>“They do not know how to do right,” declares the LORD,</t> <t>“who store up in their fortresses</t> <t>what they have plundered and looted.”</t>
- 11<pb/>Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: <pb/><t>“An enemy will overrun your land,</t> <t>pull down your strongholds</t> <t>and plunder your fortresses.”</t>
- 12<pb/>This is what the LORD says: <pb/><t>“As a shepherd rescues from the lion’s mouth</t> <t>only two leg bones or a piece of an ear,</t> <t>so will the Israelites living in Samaria be rescued,</t> <t>with only the head of a bed</t> <t>and a piece of fabric<f>[9]</f> from a couch.<f>[10]</f>”</t>
- 13<pb/>“Hear this and testify against the descendants of Jacob,” declares the Lord, the LORD God Almighty.
- 14<pb/><t>“On the day I punish Israel for her sins,</t> <t>I will destroy the altars of Bethel;</t> <t>the horns of the altar will be cut off</t> <t>and fall to the ground.</t>
- 15<t>I will tear down the winter house</t> <t>along with the summer house;</t> <t>the houses adorned with ivory will be destroyed</t> <t>and the mansions will be demolished,”</t> <t>declares the LORD.</t>
