Amos 4
- 1<pb/><t>Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria,</t> <t>you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy</t> <t>and say to your husbands, “Bring us some drinks!”</t>
- 2<t>The Sovereign LORD has sworn by his holiness:</t> <t>“The time will surely come</t> <t>when you will be taken away with hooks,</t> <t>the last of you with fishhooks.<f>[11]</f></t>
- 3<t>You will each go straight out</t> <t>through breaches in the wall,</t> <t>and you will be cast out toward Harmon,<f>[12]</f>”</t> <t>declares the LORD.</t>
- 4<t>“Go to Bethel and sin;</t> <t>go to Gilgal and sin yet more.</t> <t>Bring your sacrifices every morning,</t> <t>your tithes every three years.<f>[13]</f></t>
- 5<t>Burn leavened bread as a thank offering</t> <t>and brag about your freewill offerings—</t> <t>boast about them, you Israelites,</t> <t>for this is what you love to do,”</t> <t>declares the Sovereign LORD. <pb/></t>
- 6<t>“I gave you empty stomachs in every city</t> <t>and lack of bread in every town,</t> <t>yet you have not returned to me,”</t> <t>declares the LORD. <pb/></t>
- 7<t>“I also withheld rain from you</t> <t>when the harvest was still three months away.</t> <t>I sent rain on one town,</t> <t>but withheld it from another.</t> <t>One field had rain;</t> <t>another had none and dried up.</t>
- 8<t>People staggered from town to town for water</t> <t>but did not get enough to drink,</t> <t>yet you have not returned to me,”</t> <t>declares the LORD. <pb/></t>
- 9<t>“Many times I struck your gardens and vineyards,</t> <t>destroying them with blight and mildew.</t> <t>Locusts devoured your fig and olive trees,</t> <t>yet you have not returned to me,”</t> <t>declares the LORD. <pb/></t>
- 10<t>“I sent plagues among you</t> <t>as I did to Egypt.</t> <t>I killed your young men with the sword,</t> <t>along with your captured horses.</t> <t>I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camps,</t> <t>yet you have not returned to me,”</t> <t>declares the LORD. <pb/></t>
- 11<t>“I overthrew some of you</t> <t>as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.</t> <t>You were like a burning stick snatched from the fire,</t> <t>yet you have not returned to me,”</t> <t>declares the LORD. <pb/></t>
- 12<t>“Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel,</t> <t>and because I will do this to you, Israel,</t> <t>prepare to meet your God.” <pb/></t>
- 13<t>He who forms the mountains,</t> <t>who creates the wind,</t> <t>and who reveals his thoughts to mankind,</t> <t>who turns dawn to darkness,</t> <t>and treads on the heights of the earth—</t> <t>the LORD God Almighty is his name.</t>
