Song of Solomon 8

  1. 1<pb/><t>If only you were to me like a brother,</t> <t>who was nursed at my mother’s breasts!</t> <t>Then, if I found you outside,</t> <t>I would kiss you,</t> <t>and no one would despise me.</t>
  2. 2<t>I would lead you</t> <t>and bring you to my mother’s house—</t> <t>she who has taught me.</t> <t>I would give you spiced wine to drink,</t> <t>the nectar of my pomegranates.</t>
  3. 3<t>His left arm is under my head</t> <t>and his right arm embraces me.</t>
  4. 4<t>Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you:</t> <t>Do not arouse or awaken love</t> <t>until it so desires.</t>
  5. 5<t>Who is this coming up from the wilderness</t> <t>leaning on her beloved?</t> <t>Under the apple tree I roused you;</t> <t>there your mother conceived you,</t> <t>there she who was in labor gave you birth.</t>
  6. 6<t>Place me like a seal over your heart,</t> <t>like a seal on your arm;</t> <t>for love is as strong as death,</t> <t>its jealousy<f>[17]</f> unyielding as the grave.</t> <t>It burns like blazing fire,</t> <t>like a mighty flame.<f>[18]</f></t>
  7. 7<t>Many waters cannot quench love;</t> <t>rivers cannot sweep it away.</t> <t>If one were to give</t> <t>all the wealth of one’s house for love,</t> <t>it<f>[19]</f> would be utterly scorned.</t>
  8. 8<t>We have a little sister,</t> <t>and her breasts are not yet grown.</t> <t>What shall we do for our sister</t> <t>on the day she is spoken for?</t>
  9. 9<t>If she is a wall,</t> <t>we will build towers of silver on her.</t> <t>If she is a door,</t> <t>we will enclose her with panels of cedar.</t>
  10. 10<t>I am a wall,</t> <t>and my breasts are like towers.</t> <t>Thus I have become in his eyes</t> <t>like one bringing contentment.</t>
  11. 11<t>Solomon had a vineyard in Baal Hamon;</t> <t>he let out his vineyard to tenants.</t> <t>Each was to bring for its fruit</t> <t>a thousand shekels<f>[20]</f> of silver.</t>
  12. 12<t>But my own vineyard is mine to give;</t> <t>the thousand shekels are for you, Solomon,</t> <t>and two hundred<f>[21]</f> are for those who tend its fruit.</t>
  13. 13<t>You who dwell in the gardens</t> <t>with friends in attendance,</t> <t>let me hear your voice!</t>
  14. 14<t>Come away, my beloved,</t> <t>and be like a gazelle</t> <t>or like a young stag</t> <t>on the spice-laden mountains.</t>
