Psalms 89

  1. 1<pb/><e>A maskil</e><f>[169]</f> of Ethan the Ezrahite. <pb/><t>I will sing of the LORD’s great love forever;</t> <t>with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known</t> <t>through all generations.</t>
  2. 2<t>I will declare that your love stands firm forever,</t> <t>that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.</t>
  3. 3<t>You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one,</t> <t>I have sworn to David my servant,</t>
  4. 4<t>‘I will establish your line forever</t> <t>and make your throne firm through all generations.’ ”<f>[170]</f> <pb/></t>
  5. 5<t>The heavens praise your wonders, LORD,</t> <t>your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.</t>
  6. 6<t>For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD?</t> <t>Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings?</t>
  7. 7<t>In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared;</t> <t>he is more awesome than all who surround him.</t>
  8. 8<t>Who is like you, LORD God Almighty?</t> <t>You, LORD, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you. <pb/></t>
  9. 9<t>You rule over the surging sea;</t> <t>when its waves mount up, you still them.</t>
  10. 10<t>You crushed Rahab like one of the slain;</t> <t>with your strong arm you scattered your enemies.</t>
  11. 11<t>The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth;</t> <t>you founded the world and all that is in it.</t>
  12. 12<t>You created the north and the south;</t> <t>Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name.</t>
  13. 13<t>Your arm is endowed with power;</t> <t>your hand is strong, your right hand exalted. <pb/></t>
  14. 14<t>Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;</t> <t>love and faithfulness go before you.</t>
  15. 15<t>Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,</t> <t>who walk in the light of your presence, LORD.</t>
  16. 16<t>They rejoice in your name all day long;</t> <t>they celebrate your righteousness.</t>
  17. 17<t>For you are their glory and strength,</t> <t>and by your favor you exalt our horn.<f>[171]</f></t>
  18. 18<t>Indeed, our shield<f>[172]</f> belongs to the LORD,</t> <t>our king to the Holy One of Israel. <pb/></t>
  19. 19<t>Once you spoke in a vision,</t> <t>to your faithful people you said:</t> <t>“I have bestowed strength on a warrior;</t> <t>I have raised up a young man from among the people.</t>
  20. 20<t>I have found David my servant;</t> <t>with my sacred oil I have anointed him.</t>
  21. 21<t>My hand will sustain him;</t> <t>surely my arm will strengthen him.</t>
  22. 22<t>The enemy will not get the better of him;</t> <t>the wicked will not oppress him.</t>
  23. 23<t>I will crush his foes before him</t> <t>and strike down his adversaries.</t>
  24. 24<t>My faithful love will be with him,</t> <t>and through my name his horn<f>[173]</f> will be exalted.</t>
  25. 25<t>I will set his hand over the sea,</t> <t>his right hand over the rivers.</t>
  26. 26<t>He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father,</t> <t>my God, the Rock my Savior.’</t>
  27. 27<t>And I will appoint him to be my firstborn,</t> <t>the most exalted of the kings of the earth.</t>
  28. 28<t>I will maintain my love to him forever,</t> <t>and my covenant with him will never fail.</t>
  29. 29<t>I will establish his line forever,</t> <t>his throne as long as the heavens endure. <pb/></t>
  30. 30<t>“If his sons forsake my law</t> <t>and do not follow my statutes,</t>
  31. 31<t>if they violate my decrees</t> <t>and fail to keep my commands,</t>
  32. 32<t>I will punish their sin with the rod,</t> <t>their iniquity with flogging;</t>
  33. 33<t>but I will not take my love from him,</t> <t>nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.</t>
  34. 34<t>I will not violate my covenant</t> <t>or alter what my lips have uttered.</t>
  35. 35<t>Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness—</t> <t>and I will not lie to David—</t>
  36. 36<t>that his line will continue forever</t> <t>and his throne endure before me like the sun;</t>
  37. 37<t>it will be established forever like the moon,</t> <t>the faithful witness in the sky.” <pb/></t>
  38. 38<t>But you have rejected, you have spurned,</t> <t>you have been very angry with your anointed one.</t>
  39. 39<t>You have renounced the covenant with your servant</t> <t>and have defiled his crown in the dust.</t>
  40. 40<t>You have broken through all his walls</t> <t>and reduced his strongholds to ruins.</t>
  41. 41<t>All who pass by have plundered him;</t> <t>he has become the scorn of his neighbors.</t>
  42. 42<t>You have exalted the right hand of his foes;</t> <t>you have made all his enemies rejoice.</t>
  43. 43<t>Indeed, you have turned back the edge of his sword</t> <t>and have not supported him in battle.</t>
  44. 44<t>You have put an end to his splendor</t> <t>and cast his throne to the ground.</t>
  45. 45<t>You have cut short the days of his youth;</t> <t>you have covered him with a mantle of shame. <pb/></t>
  46. 46<t>How long, LORD? Will you hide yourself forever?</t> <t>How long will your wrath burn like fire?</t>
  47. 47<t>Remember how fleeting is my life.</t> <t>For what futility you have created all humanity!</t>
  48. 48<t>Who can live and not see death,</t> <t>or who can escape the power of the grave?</t>
  49. 49<t>Lord, where is your former great love,</t> <t>which in your faithfulness you swore to David?</t>
  50. 50<t>Remember, Lord, how your servant has<f>[174]</f> been mocked,</t> <t>how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations,</t>
  51. 51<t>the taunts with which your enemies, LORD, have mocked,</t> <t>with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one. <pb/></t>
  52. 52<t>Praise be to the LORD forever! <pb/>Amen and Amen.</t>
