Psalms 79

  1. 1<pb/><e>A psalm of Asaph.</e> <pb/><t>O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;</t> <t>they have defiled your holy temple,</t> <t>they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.</t>
  2. 2<t>They have left the dead bodies of your servants</t> <t>as food for the birds of the sky,</t> <t>the flesh of your own people for the animals of the wild.</t>
  3. 3<t>They have poured out blood like water</t> <t>all around Jerusalem,</t> <t>and there is no one to bury the dead.</t>
  4. 4<t>We are objects of contempt to our neighbors,</t> <t>of scorn and derision to those around us. <pb/></t>
  5. 5<t>How long, LORD? Will you be angry forever?</t> <t>How long will your jealousy burn like fire?</t>
  6. 6<t>Pour out your wrath on the nations</t> <t>that do not acknowledge you,</t> <t>on the kingdoms</t> <t>that do not call on your name;</t>
  7. 7<t>for they have devoured Jacob</t> <t>and devastated his homeland. <pb/></t>
  8. 8<t>Do not hold against us the sins of past generations;</t> <t>may your mercy come quickly to meet us,</t> <t>for we are in desperate need.</t>
  9. 9<t>Help us, God our Savior,</t> <t>for the glory of your name;</t> <t>deliver us and forgive our sins</t> <t>for your name’s sake.</t>
  10. 10<t>Why should the nations say,</t> <t>“Where is their God?” <pb/>Before our eyes, make known among the nations</t> <t>that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants.</t>
  11. 11<t>May the groans of the prisoners come before you;</t> <t>with your strong arm preserve those condemned to die.</t>
  12. 12<t>Pay back into the laps of our neighbors seven times</t> <t>the contempt they have hurled at you, Lord.</t>
  13. 13<t>Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture,</t> <t>will praise you forever;</t> <t>from generation to generation</t> <t>we will proclaim your praise.</t>
