Psalms 69
- 1<pb/><e>For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David.</e> <pb/><t>Save me, O God,</t> <t>for the waters have come up to my neck.</t>
- 2<t>I sink in the miry depths,</t> <t>where there is no foothold.</t> <t>I have come into the deep waters;</t> <t>the floods engulf me.</t>
- 3<t>I am worn out calling for help;</t> <t>my throat is parched.</t> <t>My eyes fail,</t> <t>looking for my God.</t>
- 4<t>Those who hate me without reason</t> <t>outnumber the hairs of my head;</t> <t>many are my enemies without cause,</t> <t>those who seek to destroy me.</t> <t>I am forced to restore</t> <t>what I did not steal. <pb/></t>
- 5<t>You, God, know my folly;</t> <t>my guilt is not hidden from you. <pb/></t>
- 6<t>Lord, the LORD Almighty,</t> <t>may those who hope in you</t> <t>not be disgraced because of me;</t> <t>God of Israel,</t> <t>may those who seek you</t> <t>not be put to shame because of me.</t>
- 7<t>For I endure scorn for your sake,</t> <t>and shame covers my face.</t>
- 8<t>I am a foreigner to my own family,</t> <t>a stranger to my own mother’s children;</t>
- 9<t>for zeal for your house consumes me,</t> <t>and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.</t>
- 10<t>When I weep and fast,</t> <t>I must endure scorn;</t>
- 11<t>when I put on sackcloth,</t> <t>people make sport of me.</t>
- 12<t>Those who sit at the gate mock me,</t> <t>and I am the song of the drunkards. <pb/></t>
- 13<t>But I pray to you, LORD,</t> <t>in the time of your favor;</t> <t>in your great love, O God,</t> <t>answer me with your sure salvation.</t>
- 14<t>Rescue me from the mire,</t> <t>do not let me sink;</t> <t>deliver me from those who hate me,</t> <t>from the deep waters.</t>
- 15<t>Do not let the floodwaters engulf me</t> <t>or the depths swallow me up</t> <t>or the pit close its mouth over me. <pb/></t>
- 16<t>Answer me, LORD, out of the goodness of your love;</t> <t>in your great mercy turn to me.</t>
- 17<t>Do not hide your face from your servant;</t> <t>answer me quickly, for I am in trouble.</t>
- 18<t>Come near and rescue me;</t> <t>deliver me because of my foes. <pb/></t>
- 19<t>You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed;</t> <t>all my enemies are before you.</t>
- 20<t>Scorn has broken my heart</t> <t>and has left me helpless;</t> <t>I looked for sympathy, but there was none,</t> <t>for comforters, but I found none.</t>
- 21<t>They put gall in my food</t> <t>and gave me vinegar for my thirst. <pb/></t>
- 22<t>May the table set before them become a snare;</t> <t>may it become retribution and<f>[132]</f> a trap.</t>
- 23<t>May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,</t> <t>and their backs be bent forever.</t>
- 24<t>Pour out your wrath on them;</t> <t>let your fierce anger overtake them.</t>
- 25<t>May their place be deserted;</t> <t>let there be no one to dwell in their tents.</t>
- 26<t>For they persecute those you wound</t> <t>and talk about the pain of those you hurt.</t>
- 27<t>Charge them with crime upon crime;</t> <t>do not let them share in your salvation.</t>
- 28<t>May they be blotted out of the book of life</t> <t>and not be listed with the righteous. <pb/></t>
- 29<t>But as for me, afflicted and in pain—</t> <t>may your salvation, God, protect me. <pb/></t>
- 30<t>I will praise God’s name in song</t> <t>and glorify him with thanksgiving.</t>
- 31<t>This will please the LORD more than an ox,</t> <t>more than a bull with its horns and hooves.</t>
- 32<t>The poor will see and be glad—</t> <t>you who seek God, may your hearts live!</t>
- 33<t>The LORD hears the needy</t> <t>and does not despise his captive people. <pb/></t>
- 34<t>Let heaven and earth praise him,</t> <t>the seas and all that move in them,</t>
- 35<t>for God will save Zion</t> <t>and rebuild the cities of Judah.</t> <t>Then people will settle there and possess it;</t>
- 36<t>the children of his servants will inherit it,</t> <t>and those who love his name will dwell there.</t>
