Psalms 59

  1. 1<pb/><e>For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam.</e><f>[106]</f> When Saul had sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him. <pb/><t>Deliver me from my enemies, O God;</t> <t>be my fortress against those who are attacking me.</t>
  2. 2<t>Deliver me from evildoers</t> <t>and save me from those who are after my blood. <pb/></t>
  3. 3<t>See how they lie in wait for me!</t> <t>Fierce men conspire against me</t> <t>for no offense or sin of mine, LORD.</t>
  4. 4<t>I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me.</t> <t>Arise to help me; look on my plight!</t>
  5. 5<t>You, LORD God Almighty,</t> <t>you who are the God of Israel,</t> <t>rouse yourself to punish all the nations;</t> <t>show no mercy to wicked traitors.<f>[107]</f> <pb/></t>
  6. 6<t>They return at evening,</t> <t>snarling like dogs,</t> <t>and prowl about the city.</t>
  7. 7<t>See what they spew from their mouths—</t> <t>the words from their lips are sharp as swords,</t> <t>and they think, “Who can hear us?”</t>
  8. 8<t>But you laugh at them, LORD;</t> <t>you scoff at all those nations. <pb/></t>
  9. 9<t>You are my strength, I watch for you;</t> <t>you, God, are my fortress,</t>
  10. 10<t>my God on whom I can rely. <pb/>God will go before me</t> <t>and will let me gloat over those who slander me.</t>
  11. 11<t>But do not kill them, Lord our shield,<f>[108]</f></t> <t>or my people will forget.</t> <t>In your might uproot them</t> <t>and bring them down.</t>
  12. 12<t>For the sins of their mouths,</t> <t>for the words of their lips,</t> <t>let them be caught in their pride.</t> <t>For the curses and lies they utter,</t>
  13. 13<t>consume them in your wrath,</t> <t>consume them till they are no more.</t> <t>Then it will be known to the ends of the earth</t> <t>that God rules over Jacob. <pb/></t>
  14. 14<t>They return at evening,</t> <t>snarling like dogs,</t> <t>and prowl about the city.</t>
  15. 15<t>They wander about for food</t> <t>and howl if not satisfied.</t>
  16. 16<t>But I will sing of your strength,</t> <t>in the morning I will sing of your love;</t> <t>for you are my fortress,</t> <t>my refuge in times of trouble. <pb/></t>
  17. 17<t>You are my strength, I sing praise to you;</t> <t>you, God, are my fortress,</t> <t>my God on whom I can rely.</t>
