Psalms 22
- 1<pb/><e>For the director of music. To the tune of “The Doe of the Morning.” A psalm of David.</e> <pb/><t>My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?</t> <t>Why are you so far from saving me,</t> <t>so far from my cries of anguish?</t>
- 2<t>My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,</t> <t>by night, but I find no rest.<f>[33]</f> <pb/></t>
- 3<t>Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;</t> <t>you are the one Israel praises.<f>[34]</f></t>
- 4<t>In you our ancestors put their trust;</t> <t>they trusted and you delivered them.</t>
- 5<t>To you they cried out and were saved;</t> <t>in you they trusted and were not put to shame. <pb/></t>
- 6<t>But I am a worm and not a man,</t> <t>scorned by everyone, despised by the people.</t>
- 7<t>All who see me mock me;</t> <t>they hurl insults, shaking their heads.</t>
- 8<t>“He trusts in the LORD,” they say,</t> <t>“let the LORD rescue him.</t> <t>Let him deliver him,</t> <t>since he delights in him.” <pb/></t>
- 9<t>Yet you brought me out of the womb;</t> <t>you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast.</t>
- 10<t>From birth I was cast on you;</t> <t>from my mother’s womb you have been my God. <pb/></t>
- 11<t>Do not be far from me,</t> <t>for trouble is near</t> <t>and there is no one to help. <pb/></t>
- 12<t>Many bulls surround me;</t> <t>strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.</t>
- 13<t>Roaring lions that tear their prey</t> <t>open their mouths wide against me.</t>
- 14<t>I am poured out like water,</t> <t>and all my bones are out of joint.</t> <t>My heart has turned to wax;</t> <t>it has melted within me.</t>
- 15<t>My mouth<f>[35]</f> is dried up like a potsherd,</t> <t>and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;</t> <t>you lay me in the dust of death. <pb/></t>
- 16<t>Dogs surround me,</t> <t>a pack of villains encircles me;</t> <t>they pierce<f>[36]</f> my hands and my feet.</t>
- 17<t>All my bones are on display;</t> <t>people stare and gloat over me.</t>
- 18<t>They divide my clothes among them</t> <t>and cast lots for my garment. <pb/></t>
- 19<t>But you, LORD, do not be far from me.</t> <t>You are my strength; come quickly to help me.</t>
- 20<t>Deliver me from the sword,</t> <t>my precious life from the power of the dogs.</t>
- 21<t>Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;</t> <t>save me from the horns of the wild oxen. <pb/></t>
- 22<t>I will declare your name to my people;</t> <t>in the assembly I will praise you.</t>
- 23<t>You who fear the LORD, praise him!</t> <t>All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!</t> <t>Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!</t>
- 24<t>For he has not despised or scorned</t> <t>the suffering of the afflicted one;</t> <t>he has not hidden his face from him</t> <t>but has listened to his cry for help. <pb/></t>
- 25<t>From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;</t> <t>before those who fear you<f>[37]</f> I will fulfill my vows.</t>
- 26<t>The poor will eat and be satisfied;</t> <t>those who seek the LORD will praise him—</t> <t>may your hearts live forever! <pb/></t>
- 27<t>All the ends of the earth</t> <t>will remember and turn to the LORD,</t> <t>and all the families of the nations</t> <t>will bow down before him,</t>
- 28<t>for dominion belongs to the LORD</t> <t>and he rules over the nations. <pb/></t>
- 29<t>All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;</t> <t>all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—</t> <t>those who cannot keep themselves alive.</t>
- 30<t>Posterity will serve him;</t> <t>future generations will be told about the Lord.</t>
- 31<t>They will proclaim his righteousness,</t> <t>declaring to a people yet unborn:</t> <t>He has done it!</t>
