Psalms 109
- 1<pb/><e>For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.</e> <pb/><t>My God, whom I praise,</t> <t>do not remain silent,</t>
- 2<t>for people who are wicked and deceitful</t> <t>have opened their mouths against me;</t> <t>they have spoken against me with lying tongues.</t>
- 3<t>With words of hatred they surround me;</t> <t>they attack me without cause.</t>
- 4<t>In return for my friendship they accuse me,</t> <t>but I am a man of prayer.</t>
- 5<t>They repay me evil for good,</t> <t>and hatred for my friendship. <pb/></t>
- 6<t>Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy;</t> <t>let an accuser stand at his right hand.</t>
- 7<t>When he is tried, let him be found guilty,</t> <t>and may his prayers condemn him.</t>
- 8<t>May his days be few;</t> <t>may another take his place of leadership.</t>
- 9<t>May his children be fatherless</t> <t>and his wife a widow.</t>
- 10<t>May his children be wandering beggars;</t> <t>may they be driven<f>[194]</f> from their ruined homes.</t>
- 11<t>May a creditor seize all he has;</t> <t>may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.</t>
- 12<t>May no one extend kindness to him</t> <t>or take pity on his fatherless children.</t>
- 13<t>May his descendants be cut off,</t> <t>their names blotted out from the next generation.</t>
- 14<t>May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD;</t> <t>may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.</t>
- 15<t>May their sins always remain before the LORD,</t> <t>that he may blot out their name from the earth. <pb/></t>
- 16<t>For he never thought of doing a kindness,</t> <t>but hounded to death the poor</t> <t>and the needy and the brokenhearted.</t>
- 17<t>He loved to pronounce a curse—</t> <t>may it come back on him.</t> <t>He found no pleasure in blessing—</t> <t>may it be far from him.</t>
- 18<t>He wore cursing as his garment;</t> <t>it entered into his body like water,</t> <t>into his bones like oil.</t>
- 19<t>May it be like a cloak wrapped about him,</t> <t>like a belt tied forever around him.</t>
- 20<t>May this be the LORD’s payment to my accusers,</t> <t>to those who speak evil of me. <pb/></t>
- 21<t>But you, Sovereign LORD,</t> <t>help me for your name’s sake;</t> <t>out of the goodness of your love, deliver me.</t>
- 22<t>For I am poor and needy,</t> <t>and my heart is wounded within me.</t>
- 23<t>I fade away like an evening shadow;</t> <t>I am shaken off like a locust.</t>
- 24<t>My knees give way from fasting;</t> <t>my body is thin and gaunt.</t>
- 25<t>I am an object of scorn to my accusers;</t> <t>when they see me, they shake their heads. <pb/></t>
- 26<t>Help me, LORD my God;</t> <t>save me according to your unfailing love.</t>
- 27<t>Let them know that it is your hand,</t> <t>that you, LORD, have done it.</t>
- 28<t>While they curse, may you bless;</t> <t>may those who attack me be put to shame,</t> <t>but may your servant rejoice.</t>
- 29<t>May my accusers be clothed with disgrace</t> <t>and wrapped in shame as in a cloak. <pb/></t>
- 30<t>With my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD;</t> <t>in the great throng of worshipers I will praise him.</t>
- 31<t>For he stands at the right hand of the needy,</t> <t>to save their lives from those who would condemn them.</t>
