- 6<t>Wounds from a friend can be trusted,</t> <t>but an enemy multiplies kisses. <pb/></t>
- 7<t>One who is full loathes honey from the comb,</t> <t>but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet. <pb/></t>
- 8<t>Like a bird that flees its nest</t> <t>is anyone who flees from home. <pb/></t>
- 9<t>Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart,</t> <t>and the pleasantness of a friend</t> <t>springs from their heartfelt advice. <pb/></t>
- 10<t>Do not forsake your friend or a friend of your family,</t> <t>and do not go to your relative’s house when disaster strikes you—</t> <t>better a neighbor nearby than a relative far away. <pb/></t>
- 11<t>Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart;</t> <t>then I can answer anyone who treats me with contempt. <pb/></t>
- 12<t>The prudent see danger and take refuge,</t> <t>but the simple keep going and pay the penalty. <pb/></t>
- 13<t>Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger;</t> <t>hold it in pledge if it is done for an outsider. <pb/></t>
- 14<t>If anyone loudly blesses their neighbor early in the morning,</t> <t>it will be taken as a curse. <pb/></t>
- 15<t>A quarrelsome wife is like the dripping</t> <t>of a leaky roof in a rainstorm;</t>
- 16<t>restraining her is like restraining the wind</t> <t>or grasping oil with the hand. <pb/></t>
- 17<t>As iron sharpens iron,</t> <t>so one person sharpens another. <pb/></t>
- 18<t>The one who guards a fig tree will eat its fruit,</t> <t>and whoever protects their master will be honored. <pb/></t>
- 19<t>As water reflects the face,</t> <t>so one’s life reflects the heart.<f>[45]</f> <pb/></t>
- 20<t>Death and Destruction<f>[46]</f> are never satisfied,</t> <t>and neither are human eyes. <pb/></t>
- 21<t>The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold,</t> <t>but people are tested by their praise. <pb/></t>
- 22<t>Though you grind a fool in a mortar,</t> <t>grinding them like grain with a pestle,</t> <t>you will not remove their folly from them. <pb/></t>
- 23<t>Be sure you know the condition of your flocks,</t> <t>give careful attention to your herds;</t>
- 24<t>for riches do not endure forever,</t> <t>and a crown is not secure for all generations.</t>
- 25<t>When the hay is removed and new growth appears</t> <t>and the grass from the hills is gathered in,</t>
- 26<t>the lambs will provide you with clothing,</t> <t>and the goats with the price of a field.</t>
- 27<t>You will have plenty of goats’ milk to feed your family</t> <t>and to nourish your female servants.</t>
