Micah 1
- 1<pb/>The word of the LORD that came to Micah of Moresheth during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah—the vision he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.
- 2<pb/><t>Hear, you peoples, all of you,</t> <t>listen, earth and all who live in it,</t> <t>that the Sovereign LORD may bear witness against you,</t> <t>the Lord from his holy temple.</t>
- 3<t>Look! The LORD is coming from his dwelling place;</t> <t>he comes down and treads on the heights of the earth.</t>
- 4<t>The mountains melt beneath him</t> <t>and the valleys split apart,</t> <t>like wax before the fire,</t> <t>like water rushing down a slope.</t>
- 5<t>All this is because of Jacob’s transgression,</t> <t>because of the sins of the people of Israel.</t> <t>What is Jacob’s transgression?</t> <t>Is it not Samaria?</t> <t>What is Judah’s high place?</t> <t>Is it not Jerusalem? <pb/></t>
- 6<t>“Therefore I will make Samaria a heap of rubble,</t> <t>a place for planting vineyards.</t> <t>I will pour her stones into the valley</t> <t>and lay bare her foundations.</t>
- 7<t>All her idols will be broken to pieces;</t> <t>all her temple gifts will be burned with fire;</t> <t>I will destroy all her images.</t> <t>Since she gathered her gifts from the wages of prostitutes,</t> <t>as the wages of prostitutes they will again be used.”</t>
- 8<t>Because of this I will weep and wail;</t> <t>I will go about barefoot and naked.</t> <t>I will howl like a jackal</t> <t>and moan like an owl.</t>
- 9<t>For Samaria’s plague is incurable;</t> <t>it has spread to Judah.</t> <t>It has reached the very gate of my people,</t> <t>even to Jerusalem itself.</t>
- 10<t>Tell it not in Gath<f>[1]</f>;</t> <t>weep not at all.</t> <t>In Beth Ophrah<f>[2]</f></t> <t>roll in the dust.</t>
- 11<t>Pass by naked and in shame,</t> <t>you who live in Shaphir.<f>[3]</f></t> <t>Those who live in Zaanan<f>[4]</f></t> <t>will not come out.</t> <t>Beth Ezel is in mourning;</t> <t>it no longer protects you.</t>
- 12<t>Those who live in Maroth<f>[5]</f> writhe in pain,</t> <t>waiting for relief,</t> <t>because disaster has come from the LORD,</t> <t>even to the gate of Jerusalem.</t>
- 13<t>You who live in Lachish,</t> <t>harness fast horses to the chariot.</t> <t>You are where the sin of Daughter Zion began,</t> <t>for the transgressions of Israel were found in you.</t>
- 14<t>Therefore you will give parting gifts</t> <t>to Moresheth Gath.</t> <t>The town of Akzib<f>[6]</f> will prove deceptive</t> <t>to the kings of Israel.</t>
- 15<t>I will bring a conqueror against you</t> <t>who live in Mareshah.<f>[7]</f></t> <t>The nobles of Israel</t> <t>will flee to Adullam.</t>
- 16<t>Shave your head in mourning</t> <t>for the children in whom you delight;</t> <t>make yourself as bald as the vulture,</t> <t>for they will go from you into exile.</t>
