Job 39
- 1<pb/><t>“Do you know when the mountain goats give birth?</t> <t>Do you watch when the doe bears her fawn?</t>
- 2<t>Do you count the months till they bear?</t> <t>Do you know the time they give birth?</t>
- 3<t>They crouch down and bring forth their young;</t> <t>their labor pains are ended.</t>
- 4<t>Their young thrive and grow strong in the wilds;</t> <t>they leave and do not return. <pb/></t>
- 5<t>“Who let the wild donkey go free?</t> <t>Who untied its ropes?</t>
- 6<t>I gave it the wasteland as its home,</t> <t>the salt flats as its habitat.</t>
- 7<t>It laughs at the commotion in the town;</t> <t>it does not hear a driver’s shout.</t>
- 8<t>It ranges the hills for its pasture</t> <t>and searches for any green thing. <pb/></t>
- 9<t>“Will the wild ox consent to serve you?</t> <t>Will it stay by your manger at night?</t>
- 10<t>Can you hold it to the furrow with a harness?</t> <t>Will it till the valleys behind you?</t>
- 11<t>Will you rely on it for its great strength?</t> <t>Will you leave your heavy work to it?</t>
- 12<t>Can you trust it to haul in your grain</t> <t>and bring it to your threshing floor? <pb/></t>
- 13<t>“The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully,</t> <t>though they cannot compare</t> <t>with the wings and feathers of the stork.</t>
- 14<t>She lays her eggs on the ground</t> <t>and lets them warm in the sand,</t>
- 15<t>unmindful that a foot may crush them,</t> <t>that some wild animal may trample them.</t>
- 16<t>She treats her young harshly, as if they were not hers;</t> <t>she cares not that her labor was in vain,</t>
- 17<t>for God did not endow her with wisdom</t> <t>or give her a share of good sense.</t>
- 18<t>Yet when she spreads her feathers to run,</t> <t>she laughs at horse and rider. <pb/></t>
- 19<t>“Do you give the horse its strength</t> <t>or clothe its neck with a flowing mane?</t>
- 20<t>Do you make it leap like a locust,</t> <t>striking terror with its proud snorting?</t>
- 21<t>It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength,</t> <t>and charges into the fray.</t>
- 22<t>It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing;</t> <t>it does not shy away from the sword.</t>
- 23<t>The quiver rattles against its side,</t> <t>along with the flashing spear and lance.</t>
- 24<t>In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground;</t> <t>it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.</t>
- 25<t>At the blast of the trumpet it snorts, ‘Aha!’</t> <t>It catches the scent of battle from afar,</t> <t>the shout of commanders and the battle cry. <pb/></t>
- 26<t>“Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom</t> <t>and spread its wings toward the south?</t>
- 27<t>Does the eagle soar at your command</t> <t>and build its nest on high?</t>
- 28<t>It dwells on a cliff and stays there at night;</t> <t>a rocky crag is its stronghold.</t>
- 29<t>From there it looks for food;</t> <t>its eyes detect it from afar.</t>
- 30<t>Its young ones feast on blood,</t> <t>and where the slain are, there it is.”</t>
