Job 27
- 1<pb/>And Job continued his discourse:
- 2<pb/><t>“As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice,</t> <t>the Almighty, who has made my life bitter,</t>
- 3<t>as long as I have life within me,</t> <t>the breath of God in my nostrils,</t>
- 4<t>my lips will not say anything wicked,</t> <t>and my tongue will not utter lies.</t>
- 5<t>I will never admit you are in the right;</t> <t>till I die, I will not deny my integrity.</t>
- 6<t>I will maintain my innocence and never let go of it;</t> <t>my conscience will not reproach me as long as I live. <pb/></t>
- 7<t>“May my enemy be like the wicked,</t> <t>my adversary like the unjust!</t>
- 8<t>For what hope have the godless when they are cut off,</t> <t>when God takes away their life?</t>
- 9<t>Does God listen to their cry</t> <t>when distress comes upon them?</t>
- 10<t>Will they find delight in the Almighty?</t> <t>Will they call on God at all times? <pb/></t>
- 11<t>“I will teach you about the power of God;</t> <t>the ways of the Almighty I will not conceal.</t>
- 12<t>You have all seen this yourselves.</t> <t>Why then this meaningless talk? <pb/></t>
- 13<t>“Here is the fate God allots to the wicked,</t> <t>the heritage a ruthless man receives from the Almighty:</t>
- 14<t>However many his children, their fate is the sword;</t> <t>his offspring will never have enough to eat.</t>
- 15<t>The plague will bury those who survive him,</t> <t>and their widows will not weep for them.</t>
- 16<t>Though he heaps up silver like dust</t> <t>and clothes like piles of clay,</t>
- 17<t>what he lays up the righteous will wear,</t> <t>and the innocent will divide his silver.</t>
- 18<t>The house he builds is like a moth’s cocoon,</t> <t>like a hut made by a watchman.</t>
- 19<t>He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more;</t> <t>when he opens his eyes, all is gone.</t>
- 20<t>Terrors overtake him like a flood;</t> <t>a tempest snatches him away in the night.</t>
- 21<t>The east wind carries him off, and he is gone;</t> <t>it sweeps him out of his place.</t>
- 22<t>It hurls itself against him without mercy</t> <t>as he flees headlong from its power.</t>
- 23<t>It claps its hands in derision</t> <t>and hisses him out of his place.”</t>
