Isaiah 3
- 1<pb/><t>See now, the Lord,</t> <t>the LORD Almighty,</t> <t>is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah</t> <t>both supply and support:</t> <t>all supplies of food and all supplies of water,</t>
- 2<t>the hero and the warrior,</t> <t>the judge and the prophet,</t> <t>the diviner and the elder,</t>
- 3<t>the captain of fifty and the man of rank,</t> <t>the counselor, skilled craftsman and clever enchanter. <pb/></t>
- 4<t>“I will make mere youths their officials;</t> <t>children will rule over them.” <pb/></t>
- 5<t>People will oppress each other—</t> <t>man against man, neighbor against neighbor.</t> <t>The young will rise up against the old,</t> <t>the nobody against the honored. <pb/></t>
- 6<t>A man will seize one of his brothers</t> <t>in his father’s house, and say,</t> <t>“You have a cloak, you be our leader;</t> <t>take charge of this heap of ruins!”</t>
- 7<t>But in that day he will cry out,</t> <t>“I have no remedy.</t> <t>I have no food or clothing in my house;</t> <t>do not make me the leader of the people.” <pb/></t>
- 8<t>Jerusalem staggers,</t> <t>Judah is falling;</t> <t>their words and deeds are against the LORD,</t> <t>defying his glorious presence.</t>
- 9<t>The look on their faces testifies against them;</t> <t>they parade their sin like Sodom;</t> <t>they do not hide it.</t> <t>Woe to them!</t> <t>They have brought disaster upon themselves. <pb/></t>
- 10<t>Tell the righteous it will be well with them,</t> <t>for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.</t>
- 11<t>Woe to the wicked!</t> <t>Disaster is upon them!</t> <t>They will be paid back</t> <t>for what their hands have done. <pb/></t>
- 12<t>Youths oppress my people,</t> <t>women rule over them.</t> <t>My people, your guides lead you astray;</t> <t>they turn you from the path. <pb/></t>
- 13<t>The LORD takes his place in court;</t> <t>he rises to judge the people.</t>
- 14<t>The LORD enters into judgment</t> <t>against the elders and leaders of his people:</t> <t>“It is you who have ruined my vineyard;</t> <t>the plunder from the poor is in your houses.</t>
- 15<t>What do you mean by crushing my people</t> <t>and grinding the faces of the poor?”</t> <t>declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty. <pb/></t>
- 16<t>The LORD says,</t> <t>“The women of Zion are haughty,</t> <t>walking along with outstretched necks,</t> <t>flirting with their eyes,</t> <t>strutting along with swaying hips,</t> <t>with ornaments jingling on their ankles.</t>
- 17<t>Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion;</t> <t>the LORD will make their scalps bald.”</t>
- 18<pb/>In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,
- 19the earrings and bracelets and veils,
- 20the headdresses and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms,
- 21the signet rings and nose rings,
- 22the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses
- 23and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls.
- 24<pb/><t>Instead of fragrance there will be a stench;</t> <t>instead of a sash, a rope;</t> <t>instead of well-dressed hair, baldness;</t> <t>instead of fine clothing, sackcloth;</t> <t>instead of beauty, branding.</t>
- 25<t>Your men will fall by the sword,</t> <t>your warriors in battle.</t>
- 26<t>The gates of Zion will lament and mourn;</t> <t>destitute, she will sit on the ground.</t>
