Isaiah 24
- 1<pb/><t>See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth</t> <t>and devastate it;</t> <t>he will ruin its face</t> <t>and scatter its inhabitants—</t>
- 2<t>it will be the same</t> <t>for priest as for people,</t> <t>for the master as for his servant,</t> <t>for the mistress as for her servant,</t> <t>for seller as for buyer,</t> <t>for borrower as for lender,</t> <t>for debtor as for creditor.</t>
- 3<t>The earth will be completely laid waste</t> <t>and totally plundered.</t> <t>The LORD has spoken this word. <pb/></t>
- 4<t>The earth dries up and withers,</t> <t>the world languishes and withers,</t> <t>the heavens languish with the earth.</t>
- 5<t>The earth is defiled by its people;</t> <t>they have disobeyed the laws,</t> <t>violated the statutes</t> <t>and broken the everlasting covenant.</t>
- 6<t>Therefore a curse consumes the earth;</t> <t>its people must bear their guilt.</t> <t>Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up,</t> <t>and very few are left.</t>
- 7<t>The new wine dries up and the vine withers;</t> <t>all the merrymakers groan.</t>
- 8<t>The joyful timbrels are stilled,</t> <t>the noise of the revelers has stopped,</t> <t>the joyful harp is silent.</t>
- 9<t>No longer do they drink wine with a song;</t> <t>the beer is bitter to its drinkers.</t>
- 10<t>The ruined city lies desolate;</t> <t>the entrance to every house is barred.</t>
- 11<t>In the streets they cry out for wine;</t> <t>all joy turns to gloom,</t> <t>all joyful sounds are banished from the earth.</t>
- 12<t>The city is left in ruins,</t> <t>its gate is battered to pieces.</t>
- 13<t>So will it be on the earth</t> <t>and among the nations,</t> <t>as when an olive tree is beaten,</t> <t>or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest. <pb/></t>
- 14<t>They raise their voices, they shout for joy;</t> <t>from the west they acclaim the LORD’s majesty.</t>
- 15<t>Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD;</t> <t>exalt the name of the LORD, the God of Israel,</t> <t>in the islands of the sea.</t>
- 16<t>From the ends of the earth we hear singing:</t> <t>“Glory to the Righteous One.” <pb/>But I said, “I waste away, I waste away!</t> <t>Woe to me!</t> <t>The treacherous betray!</t> <t>With treachery the treacherous betray!”</t>
- 17<t>Terror and pit and snare await you,</t> <t>people of the earth.</t>
- 18<t>Whoever flees at the sound of terror</t> <t>will fall into a pit;</t> <t>whoever climbs out of the pit</t> <t>will be caught in a snare. <pb/>The floodgates of the heavens are opened,</t> <t>the foundations of the earth shake.</t>
- 19<t>The earth is broken up,</t> <t>the earth is split asunder,</t> <t>the earth is violently shaken.</t>
- 20<t>The earth reels like a drunkard,</t> <t>it sways like a hut in the wind;</t> <t>so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion</t> <t>that it falls—never to rise again. <pb/></t>
- 21<t>In that day the LORD will punish</t> <t>the powers in the heavens above</t> <t>and the kings on the earth below.</t>
- 22<t>They will be herded together</t> <t>like prisoners bound in a dungeon;</t> <t>they will be shut up in prison</t> <t>and be punished<f>[54]</f> after many days.</t>
- 23<t>The moon will be dismayed,</t> <t>the sun ashamed;</t> <t>for the LORD Almighty will reign</t> <t>on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,</t> <t>and before its elders—with great glory.</t>
