Hosea 9

  1. 1<pb/><t>Do not rejoice, Israel;</t> <t>do not be jubilant like the other nations.</t> <t>For you have been unfaithful to your God;</t> <t>you love the wages of a prostitute</t> <t>at every threshing floor.</t>
  2. 2<t>Threshing floors and winepresses will not feed the people;</t> <t>the new wine will fail them.</t>
  3. 3<t>They will not remain in the LORD’s land;</t> <t>Ephraim will return to Egypt</t> <t>and eat unclean food in Assyria.</t>
  4. 4<t>They will not pour out wine offerings to the LORD,</t> <t>nor will their sacrifices please him.</t> <t>Such sacrifices will be to them like the bread of mourners;</t> <t>all who eat them will be unclean.</t> <t>This food will be for themselves;</t> <t>it will not come into the temple of the LORD. <pb/></t>
  5. 5<t>What will you do on the day of your appointed festivals,</t> <t>on the feast days of the LORD?</t>
  6. 6<t>Even if they escape from destruction,</t> <t>Egypt will gather them,</t> <t>and Memphis will bury them.</t> <t>Their treasures of silver will be taken over by briers,</t> <t>and thorns will overrun their tents.</t>
  7. 7<t>The days of punishment are coming,</t> <t>the days of reckoning are at hand.</t> <t>Let Israel know this.</t> <t>Because your sins are so many</t> <t>and your hostility so great,</t> <t>the prophet is considered a fool,</t> <t>the inspired person a maniac.</t>
  8. 8<t>The prophet, along with my God,</t> <t>is the watchman over Ephraim,<f>[24]</f></t> <t>yet snares await him on all his paths,</t> <t>and hostility in the house of his God.</t>
  9. 9<t>They have sunk deep into corruption,</t> <t>as in the days of Gibeah.</t> <t>God will remember their wickedness</t> <t>and punish them for their sins. <pb/></t>
  10. 10<t>“When I found Israel,</t> <t>it was like finding grapes in the desert;</t> <t>when I saw your ancestors,</t> <t>it was like seeing the early fruit on the fig tree.</t> <t>But when they came to Baal Peor,</t> <t>they consecrated themselves to that shameful idol</t> <t>and became as vile as the thing they loved.</t>
  11. 11<t>Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird—</t> <t>no birth, no pregnancy, no conception.</t>
  12. 12<t>Even if they rear children,</t> <t>I will bereave them of every one.</t> <t>Woe to them</t> <t>when I turn away from them!</t>
  13. 13<t>I have seen Ephraim, like Tyre,</t> <t>planted in a pleasant place.</t> <t>But Ephraim will bring out</t> <t>their children to the slayer.” <pb/></t>
  14. 14<t>Give them, LORD—</t> <t>what will you give them?</t> <t>Give them wombs that miscarry</t> <t>and breasts that are dry. <pb/></t>
  15. 15<t>“Because of all their wickedness in Gilgal,</t> <t>I hated them there.</t> <t>Because of their sinful deeds,</t> <t>I will drive them out of my house.</t> <t>I will no longer love them;</t> <t>all their leaders are rebellious.</t>
  16. 16<t>Ephraim is blighted,</t> <t>their root is withered,</t> <t>they yield no fruit.</t> <t>Even if they bear children,</t> <t>I will slay their cherished offspring.” <pb/></t>
  17. 17<t>My God will reject them</t> <t>because they have not obeyed him;</t> <t>they will be wanderers among the nations.</t>
