Hosea 8

  1. 1<pb/><t>“Put the trumpet to your lips!</t> <t>An eagle is over the house of the LORD</t> <t>because the people have broken my covenant</t> <t>and rebelled against my law.</t>
  2. 2<t>Israel cries out to me,</t> <t>‘Our God, we acknowledge you!’</t>
  3. 3<t>But Israel has rejected what is good;</t> <t>an enemy will pursue him.</t>
  4. 4<t>They set up kings without my consent;</t> <t>they choose princes without my approval.</t> <t>With their silver and gold</t> <t>they make idols for themselves</t> <t>to their own destruction.</t>
  5. 5<t>Samaria, throw out your calf-idol!</t> <t>My anger burns against them.</t> <t>How long will they be incapable of purity?</t>
  6. 6<t>They are from Israel!</t> <t>This calf—a metalworker has made it;</t> <t>it is not God.</t> <t>It will be broken in pieces,</t> <t>that calf of Samaria. <pb/></t>
  7. 7<t>“They sow the wind</t> <t>and reap the whirlwind.</t> <t>The stalk has no head;</t> <t>it will produce no flour.</t> <t>Were it to yield grain,</t> <t>foreigners would swallow it up.</t>
  8. 8<t>Israel is swallowed up;</t> <t>now she is among the nations</t> <t>like something no one wants.</t>
  9. 9<t>For they have gone up to Assyria</t> <t>like a wild donkey wandering alone.</t> <t>Ephraim has sold herself to lovers.</t>
  10. 10<t>Although they have sold themselves among the nations,</t> <t>I will now gather them together.</t> <t>They will begin to waste away</t> <t>under the oppression of the mighty king. <pb/></t>
  11. 11<t>“Though Ephraim built many altars for sin offerings,</t> <t>these have become altars for sinning.</t>
  12. 12<t>I wrote for them the many things of my law,</t> <t>but they regarded them as something foreign.</t>
  13. 13<t>Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to me,</t> <t>and though they eat the meat,</t> <t>the LORD is not pleased with them.</t> <t>Now he will remember their wickedness</t> <t>and punish their sins:</t> <t>They will return to Egypt.</t>
  14. 14<t>Israel has forgotten their Maker</t> <t>and built palaces;</t> <t>Judah has fortified many towns.</t> <t>But I will send fire on their cities</t> <t>that will consume their fortresses.”</t>
