Ezekiel 28
- 1<pb/>The word of the LORD came to me:
- 2“Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: <pb/><t>“ ‘In the pride of your heart</t> <t>you say, “I am a god;</t> <t>I sit on the throne of a god</t> <t>in the heart of the seas.”</t> <t>But you are a mere mortal and not a god,</t> <t>though you think you are as wise as a god.</t>
- 3<t>Are you wiser than Daniel<f>[50]</f>?</t> <t>Is no secret hidden from you?</t>
- 4<t>By your wisdom and understanding</t> <t>you have gained wealth for yourself</t> <t>and amassed gold and silver</t> <t>in your treasuries.</t>
- 5<t>By your great skill in trading</t> <t>you have increased your wealth,</t> <t>and because of your wealth</t> <t>your heart has grown proud.</t>
- 6<pb/>“ ‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: <pb/><t>“ ‘Because you think you are wise,</t> <t>as wise as a god,</t>
- 7<t>I am going to bring foreigners against you,</t> <t>the most ruthless of nations;</t> <t>they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom</t> <t>and pierce your shining splendor.</t>
- 8<t>They will bring you down to the pit,</t> <t>and you will die a violent death</t> <t>in the heart of the seas.</t>
- 9<t>Will you then say, “I am a god,”</t> <t>in the presence of those who kill you?</t> <t>You will be but a mortal, not a god,</t> <t>in the hands of those who slay you.</t>
- 10<t>You will die the death of the uncircumcised</t> <t>at the hands of foreigners.</t> <pb/>I have spoken, declares the Sovereign LORD.’ ”
- 11<pb/>The word of the LORD came to me:
- 12“Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: <pb/><t>“ ‘You were the seal of perfection,</t> <t>full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.</t>
- 13<t>You were in Eden,</t> <t>the garden of God;</t> <t>every precious stone adorned you:</t> <t>carnelian, chrysolite and emerald,</t> <t>topaz, onyx and jasper,</t> <t>lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl.<f>[51]</f></t> <t>Your settings and mountings<f>[52]</f> were made of gold;</t> <t>on the day you were created they were prepared.</t>
- 14<t>You were anointed as a guardian cherub,</t> <t>for so I ordained you.</t> <t>You were on the holy mount of God;</t> <t>you walked among the fiery stones.</t>
- 15<t>You were blameless in your ways</t> <t>from the day you were created</t> <t>till wickedness was found in you.</t>
- 16<t>Through your widespread trade</t> <t>you were filled with violence,</t> <t>and you sinned.</t> <t>So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God,</t> <t>and I expelled you, guardian cherub,</t> <t>from among the fiery stones.</t>
- 17<t>Your heart became proud</t> <t>on account of your beauty,</t> <t>and you corrupted your wisdom</t> <t>because of your splendor.</t> <t>So I threw you to the earth;</t> <t>I made a spectacle of you before kings.</t>
- 18<t>By your many sins and dishonest trade</t> <t>you have desecrated your sanctuaries.</t> <t>So I made a fire come out from you,</t> <t>and it consumed you,</t> <t>and I reduced you to ashes on the ground</t> <t>in the sight of all who were watching.</t>
- 19<t>All the nations who knew you</t> <t>are appalled at you;</t> <t>you have come to a horrible end</t> <t>and will be no more.’ ”</t>
- 20<pb/>The word of the LORD came to me:
- 21“Son of man, set your face against Sidon; prophesy against her
- 22and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: <pb/><t>“ ‘I am against you, Sidon,</t> <t>and among you I will display my glory.</t> <t>You will know that I am the LORD,</t> <t>when I inflict punishment on you</t> <t>and within you am proved to be holy.</t>
- 23<t>I will send a plague upon you</t> <t>and make blood flow in your streets.</t> <t>The slain will fall within you,</t> <t>with the sword against you on every side.</t> <t>Then you will know that I am the LORD.</t>
- 24<pb/>“ ‘No longer will the people of Israel have malicious neighbors who are painful briers and sharp thorns. Then they will know that I am the Sovereign LORD.
- 25<pb/>“ ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: When I gather the people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered, I will be proved holy through them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob.
- 26They will live there in safety and will build houses and plant vineyards; they will live in safety when I inflict punishment on all their neighbors who maligned them. Then they will know that I am the LORD their God.’ ”
