Psalms 74

  1. 1<pb/><e>A maskil</e><f>[140]</f> of Asaph. <pb/><t>O God, why have you rejected us forever?</t> <t>Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?</t>
  2. 2<t>Remember the nation you purchased long ago,</t> <t>the people of your inheritance, whom you redeemed—</t> <t>Mount Zion, where you dwelt.</t>
  3. 3<t>Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins,</t> <t>all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary. <pb/></t>
  4. 4<t>Your foes roared in the place where you met with us;</t> <t>they set up their standards as signs.</t>
  5. 5<t>They behaved like men wielding axes</t> <t>to cut through a thicket of trees.</t>
  6. 6<t>They smashed all the carved paneling</t> <t>with their axes and hatchets.</t>
  7. 7<t>They burned your sanctuary to the ground;</t> <t>they defiled the dwelling place of your Name.</t>
  8. 8<t>They said in their hearts, “We will crush them completely!”</t> <t>They burned every place where God was worshiped in the land. <pb/></t>
  9. 9<t>We are given no signs from God;</t> <t>no prophets are left,</t> <t>and none of us knows how long this will be.</t>
  10. 10<t>How long will the enemy mock you, God?</t> <t>Will the foe revile your name forever?</t>
  11. 11<t>Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?</t> <t>Take it from the folds of your garment and destroy them! <pb/></t>
  12. 12<t>But God is my King from long ago;</t> <t>he brings salvation on the earth. <pb/></t>
  13. 13<t>It was you who split open the sea by your power;</t> <t>you broke the heads of the monster in the waters.</t>
  14. 14<t>It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan</t> <t>and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.</t>
  15. 15<t>It was you who opened up springs and streams;</t> <t>you dried up the ever-flowing rivers.</t>
  16. 16<t>The day is yours, and yours also the night;</t> <t>you established the sun and moon.</t>
  17. 17<t>It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth;</t> <t>you made both summer and winter. <pb/></t>
  18. 18<t>Remember how the enemy has mocked you, LORD,</t> <t>how foolish people have reviled your name.</t>
  19. 19<t>Do not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts;</t> <t>do not forget the lives of your afflicted people forever.</t>
  20. 20<t>Have regard for your covenant,</t> <t>because haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land.</t>
  21. 21<t>Do not let the oppressed retreat in disgrace;</t> <t>may the poor and needy praise your name.</t>
  22. 22<t>Rise up, O God, and defend your cause;</t> <t>remember how fools mock you all day long.</t>
  23. 23<t>Do not ignore the clamor of your adversaries,</t> <t>the uproar of your enemies, which rises continually.</t>
