Proverbs 6

  1. 1<pb/><t>My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor,</t> <t>if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,</t>
  2. 2<t>you have been trapped by what you said,</t> <t>ensnared by the words of your mouth.</t>
  3. 3<t>So do this, my son, to free yourself,</t> <t>since you have fallen into your neighbor’s hands:</t> <t>Go—to the point of exhaustion—<f>[12]</f></t> <t>and give your neighbor no rest!</t>
  4. 4<t>Allow no sleep to your eyes,</t> <t>no slumber to your eyelids.</t>
  5. 5<t>Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,</t> <t>like a bird from the snare of the fowler. <pb/></t>
  6. 6<t>Go to the ant, you sluggard;</t> <t>consider its ways and be wise!</t>
  7. 7<t>It has no commander,</t> <t>no overseer or ruler,</t>
  8. 8<t>yet it stores its provisions in summer</t> <t>and gathers its food at harvest. <pb/></t>
  9. 9<t>How long will you lie there, you sluggard?</t> <t>When will you get up from your sleep?</t>
  10. 10<t>A little sleep, a little slumber,</t> <t>a little folding of the hands to rest—</t>
  11. 11<t>and poverty will come on you like a thief</t> <t>and scarcity like an armed man. <pb/></t>
  12. 12<t>A troublemaker and a villain,</t> <t>who goes about with a corrupt mouth,</t>
  13. 13<t>who winks maliciously with his eye,</t> <t>signals with his feet</t> <t>and motions with his fingers,</t>
  14. 14<t>who plots evil with deceit in his heart—</t> <t>he always stirs up conflict.</t>
  15. 15<t>Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant;</t> <t>he will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy. <pb/></t>
  16. 16<t>There are six things the LORD hates,</t> <t>seven that are detestable to him:</t>
  17. 17<t>haughty eyes,</t> <t>a lying tongue,</t> <t>hands that shed innocent blood,</t>
  18. 18<t>a heart that devises wicked schemes,</t> <t>feet that are quick to rush into evil,</t>
  19. 19<t>a false witness who pours out lies</t> <t>and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.</t>
  20. 20<t>My son, keep your father’s command</t> <t>and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.</t>
  21. 21<t>Bind them always on your heart;</t> <t>fasten them around your neck.</t>
  22. 22<t>When you walk, they will guide you;</t> <t>when you sleep, they will watch over you;</t> <t>when you awake, they will speak to you.</t>
  23. 23<t>For this command is a lamp,</t> <t>this teaching is a light,</t> <t>and correction and instruction</t> <t>are the way to life,</t>
  24. 24<t>keeping you from your neighbor’s wife,</t> <t>from the smooth talk of a wayward woman. <pb/></t>
  25. 25<t>Do not lust in your heart after her beauty</t> <t>or let her captivate you with her eyes. <pb/></t>
  26. 26<t>For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread,</t> <t>but another man’s wife preys on your very life.</t>
  27. 27<t>Can a man scoop fire into his lap</t> <t>without his clothes being burned?</t>
  28. 28<t>Can a man walk on hot coals</t> <t>without his feet being scorched?</t>
  29. 29<t>So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife;</t> <t>no one who touches her will go unpunished. <pb/></t>
  30. 30<t>People do not despise a thief if he steals</t> <t>to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.</t>
  31. 31<t>Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold,</t> <t>though it costs him all the wealth of his house.</t>
  32. 32<t>But a man who commits adultery has no sense;</t> <t>whoever does so destroys himself.</t>
  33. 33<t>Blows and disgrace are his lot,</t> <t>and his shame will never be wiped away. <pb/></t>
  34. 34<t>For jealousy arouses a husband’s fury,</t> <t>and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.</t>
  35. 35<t>He will not accept any compensation;</t> <t>he will refuse a bribe, however great it is.</t>
