Numbers 24
- 1<pb/>Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not resort to divination as at other times, but turned his face toward the wilderness.
- 2When Balaam looked out and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came on him
- 3and he spoke his message: <pb/><t>“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,</t> <t>the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,</t>
- 4<t>the prophecy of one who hears the words of God,</t> <t>who sees a vision from the Almighty,<f>[51]</f></t> <t>who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened: <pb/></t>
- 5<t>“How beautiful are your tents, Jacob,</t> <t>your dwelling places, Israel! <pb/></t>
- 6<t>“Like valleys they spread out,</t> <t>like gardens beside a river,</t> <t>like aloes planted by the LORD,</t> <t>like cedars beside the waters.</t>
- 7<t>Water will flow from their buckets;</t> <t>their seed will have abundant water. <pb/>“Their king will be greater than Agag;</t> <t>their kingdom will be exalted. <pb/></t>
- 8<t>“God brought them out of Egypt;</t> <t>they have the strength of a wild ox.</t> <t>They devour hostile nations</t> <t>and break their bones in pieces;</t> <t>with their arrows they pierce them.</t>
- 9<t>Like a lion they crouch and lie down,</t> <t>like a lioness—who dares to rouse them? <pb/>“May those who bless you be blessed</t> <t>and those who curse you be cursed!”</t>
- 10<pb/>Then Balak’s anger burned against Balaam. He struck his hands together and said to him, “I summoned you to curse my enemies, but you have blessed them these three times.
- 11Now leave at once and go home! I said I would reward you handsomely, but the LORD has kept you from being rewarded.”
- 12<pb/>Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell the messengers you sent me,
- 13‘Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the LORD—and I must say only what the LORD says’?
- 14Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in days to come.”
- 15<pb/>Then he spoke his message: <pb/><t>“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,</t> <t>the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,</t>
- 16<t>the prophecy of one who hears the words of God,</t> <t>who has knowledge from the Most High,</t> <t>who sees a vision from the Almighty,</t> <t>who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened: <pb/></t>
- 17<t>“I see him, but not now;</t> <t>I behold him, but not near.</t> <t>A star will come out of Jacob;</t> <t>a scepter will rise out of Israel.</t> <t>He will crush the foreheads of Moab,</t> <t>the skulls<f>[52]</f> of<f>[53]</f> all the people of Sheth.<f>[54]</f></t>
- 18<t>Edom will be conquered;</t> <t>Seir, his enemy, will be conquered,</t> <t>but Israel will grow strong.</t>
- 19<t>A ruler will come out of Jacob</t> <t>and destroy the survivors of the city.”</t>
- 20<pb/>Then Balaam saw Amalek and spoke his message: <pb/><t>“Amalek was first among the nations,</t> <t>but their end will be utter destruction.”</t>
- 21<pb/>Then he saw the Kenites and spoke his message: <pb/><t>“Your dwelling place is secure,</t> <t>your nest is set in a rock;</t>
- 22<t>yet you Kenites will be destroyed</t> <t>when Ashur takes you captive.”</t>
- 23<pb/>Then he spoke his message: <pb/><t>“Alas! Who can live when God does this?<f>[55]</f></t>
- 24<t>Ships will come from the shores of Cyprus;</t> <t>they will subdue Ashur and Eber,</t> <t>but they too will come to ruin.”</t>
- 25<pb/>Then Balaam got up and returned home, and Balak went his own way.
